Backseat swapped for speakers...

Post by polevaulter999 »

ive got a 77 spider and an idea. I went to get it registered at the dmv, and the lady there told me that i couldnt put seat belts in the back because it was listed as a 2 passenger. so i decided i was gonna take out the backseat(being no use to me anyway)and install a rather large speakerbox with an amp, 2 10" woofers, 4 speakers and a few tweeters. i have all the stuff for it, but havent got it in yet. any ideas on how that'll sound in a convertible?? i'll post pictures on it as soon as it's finished

lack of amplifier should be your only concern.

max out on the speakers, since the wind buffeting above 40 mph drowns out the output of most radios without an added amplifier.

I am installing an amp, the one i have is a 1000 watt. now with the setup described do u think that'll be enough to compensate for the tremendous road noise at 70mph?

Don't forget to put some speakers up front as well even if they run on the radio power it will sound
better with some front staging more stereo imaging takes place in front since our ears are facing forward,
a decent pair of 2 way 5 1/4" should do the job . But if you want a cheap way to get a good sound match
the speakers all the way around 2 pairs of 2 way speakers for mids and tweeters and just have the 10"
sub for bass .

Hey Mbouse

Did you ever resolve the engine noise issue with your radio i never saw the conclusion to that ?

I have the exact speakers you are planning on, in my 81 spider. Heres the thing...DON"T PUT IN THE 1000 WATT AMP!!!!

Im using a 250 WATT amp and I have it turned down to about 1/4 power, and it is still plenty loud on the freeway! The thing is that the sub woofers are right behind the seats so you dont need much, and in fact, all that sub bass can be bad for your internal organs if you are exposed to it all the time every day or so.

After I get done with the body kit for the spider im going to make a custom fiberglass speaker and sub enclosure molded to the rear "seats". It will hold the speakers in a way so that the bass doesnt go directly at the passengers, but a little to the side. That way you can really turn it up without discomfort, and also still have a little room for nicknacks...

My best

Just a thought has anybody tried to mount speakers in the space below and on the front the rear bench (seat) platform near the drive shaft hump?

Are you talking about cutting a hole in that area? I would advice against it since it's an important part of the structure of the unibody. I have mine mounted in the quarter trim panels:
