Has anyone used the Glaserit brand of water based paints to spray their car? Glaserit is a BASF product.
From what they say, most of the luxury car market is sprayed with this paint. In fact 32 car manufactures have approved this paint for their cars, Including the big 3 and Fiat!
It sounds like the base coat is water-based but the clearcoat is solvent based.

I don't see why it wouldn't be good. The clearcoat is going to seal it. Glasurit is one of the best brands out there in my opinion. In fact, that's what Ron sprayed my 72 Spider with and it looks just as good now as it did 13 years ago.

Re: Water based paints
Glasurits 90 line is their waterborne base coat offering and you are correct in that the clears and primers are still solvent. The only areas in North America required to use waterborne are several air districts in California and Canada.
I am partial to the 3 brand offerings from DuPont Performance Coatings ( has nothing to do with the fact that I work for DuPont!) We have 3 waterborne lines: the domestic DuPont Chromax Pro, the German Spies Hecker Permahyd and the German Standox Standohyd. The unique aspect of ours is that they are designed as one pass products, another words you do
not have to apply multiple coats and multiple trips around the car to get coverage.
Outside of being more "Green" the benefits can be quicker coverage and less material usage and some colors appear cleaner in waterborne than the same color in solvent.

Jeff,
Can you tell me where to get a color chart for this water based Glasurit /Standox ?
Is it possible to get printed matters somewhere from Germany since that’s closer to me.

I think using a paint like this is like getting a temporary tattoo.. You can get one and will look great for a few days but it will eventually wash off. Unlike a real tattoo that will remain on forever. I wouldn't recommend it.

Re: Water based paints
I'm afraid I have to disagree with your comment. Glasurit water based paints have been used on Mercedes, BMW and even Ferrari for many years. Glasurit also has a lifetime warranty if a Glasurit certified shop sprays your car. The only thing that is water based is the color. The clearcoat is still the same polyurethane it always has been.

Re: Water based paints
I have seen the water based, but still like the toxic stuff better, the feel, the look and maybe even the smell! It won't matter anyhow because Canada is going to be mandating that only low VOC paints are to be sold starting Jan 1 2009.
