What are these wires for ?

Post by Odoyle »

I noticed these 2 wires coming from ECU, anyone know what they are for? The car is a 1983 spider that was made in 09/83.

Sorry, I don't know, but I have 2 guesses: 1) an option that you don't have on your car (AC? automatic trans? extra gauge or light? power-something?) or 2) test points for specific diagnostic equipment.

I have a few such unconnected wires in my other (newer) cars, and they are by and large for connecting test equipment to allow the dealer to rapidly diagnose a problem. Or an independent shop if they happen to have that equipment.

For high Altitude connection. Look at Mirafiori.com, I think I found the owners manual there, there is a page explaining the hook up. Also an electric diagram for the 83-85 models

You have me looking at the Owners manual, Digital version of the 85, Not there. I went to my 83-85 electrical Diag manual. This shows the connection, Pin 9 and 12 unconnected on the ECU. The connection when plugged together goes to the AFM. This manual also has a photo of the leads coming out of the ECU. I cant say how it works, Maybe someone can ?

Thank you for everyone's help, I took another look at the wires and my wiring diagram for 83-85. The two wires coming out of the ecu do say 12 and 9.

In the wiring diagram these two are labeled as the "hi-altitude connectors", where 12 is a Black/Blue wire and 9 is Yellow/Black, and that's it. It doesn't show the barometric sensor on the diagram. When I google the sensor it looks like it has 3 pins.

Maybe someone with a barometric sensor attached can tell me what the rest of the wiring looks like.

So I found my spare FI harness. on the bariometric "device". Pin 6 center to ecu, pin 9 right to ecu, pin 12 left to ecu.

This harness has direct connection and no bypass connectors

It could be the PO owners swapped out the ECU and changed the harness

I check the ECU its a green label part number 280000190. The ECU for 1980 - 09-83.

Was asking around on mirafiori, Brad told me, "There were two types of altitude compensation and it sounds like you have the original type, where you just plug those two wires together for high altitude operation. The later type had the plug for that compensation device"

Makes sense, car was made in 09/83. I'm curious what happens when it's connected. The car did spend time in Colorado and Montana, so it likely was connected at some point. When I bough the car from Montana, the connectors where disconnected though. Does anyone use this?

I was also reading on mirafiori that the bosch sensor kicks in at around 2000ft.

The spare harness I have does have the altitude sensor. Also pin 1 has a connection to the coil, not found on the 1980. I will have to look at the ECU installed in my 03/83. Thanks for the post, Something to investigate.
There is an ECU that came after 0191. You would need the later ECU and a wire harness to update to the bariometric sensor.

ecu/computer
1980-82 0 280 000 190* 0 280 000 191
1983 on altitude compensator added
*superceded by 0 280 000 222
