The hardy boys and the case of the missing compensator rod

Long story short, I did a brake overhaul this weekend and when I was underneath doing the final checks to make sure everything was bolted up correctly, I realized that the brake compensator rod IS MISSING.

This left me scratching my head, because a week prior, I had the spider up on a lift at my local tire place. They jacked the rear axle up and were able to bleed the rear right caliper (the left caliper's bleeder screw snapped off, one of the reasons I overhauled my brakes). So I can only assume I had the rod at that time.

From the diagram, it does not look like the compensator rod can fall out. The rubber hangers supporting it are complete, no holes or rips or anything. It definitely did not come out when I was working.

Any theories?

I've got one if you need it, from a '76.

It's hard to imagine the rod falling out (sorry, I can't look at your picture while here at work -- we have a firewall that prevents it), being that it is fastened on both ends.

Well, I am an idiot. I checked, and sure enough, it's there, albeit covered in grime.

I guess this case is solved!

if it had been painted with Crackle Paint, you would not have had that problem. Trust me, everything I've Crackle Painted can readily be seen all the way from California to Michigan!!
