I am creating this post to share my journey in putting together my dream motor. After 2 months of hard work, I have finally gotten my motor back from the race shop in Dallas, where a new friend of mine, prepped, and advised me in building this 2.0 for my '79. After discussion with him, I found custom Venolia high compression pistons were the key. Already having a blown racing motor, I got to steal some goodies, and I am going to list the parts I am installing and using on this build.

10.5 CR Venolia Pistons
Total Seal rings
Crane cams (I will post specs later)
Crower Trimetal Rods
Dual 40IDF Spanish Webers
5lb lightened flywheel
Volumex Trimetal Main bearings
King rod bearings
Shaved Auxillary shaft
2.0 head with 5 point deeper valve job (Stock Hardened Steel Valves)
Iskyderian Valve Springs
Ceramic coated oil pump
4-2-1 manifold
Msd Soft Touch rev limiter

I am extremely excited to get this thing running, but am taking my time on the build. I currently have all 4 pistons installed, and ready to put head on, but am waiting for the dowels shipped from Dallas. I would greatly appreciate any feedback, tips, or opinions on this! This is my first high performance engine build, and I have so much to learn.

Wow, dude! That is one pretty motor.
And I've built a few. V8s, though,...

consider high voltage ignition too?

I have a msd blaster II coil, and being a '79, the marelliplex ignition set up, which from what I have heard will be plenty sufficient for the build. What substitutes for higher voltage ignition is there? My racing buddy informed me the marelliplex paired with a heavy duty control module, and a blaster II coil will be just fine.

I still have a single plane manifold with a 34 adf weber on it. Currently just sitting in the shed. I loved that manifold/carb setup, super reliable, and quick!

I have the Computronics Ignition (~65KV), and the 4-2-1 is considered to be a pretty good header without going to wild, saves a few bucks with good performance. So I was told by the major vendor gurus here, and they should know!

I see you mentioned using studs instead of head bolts. Do consider a multi-media steel head gasket. Not cheap but way better than a stock item.

I am using not head studs, but uprated specialty head bolts, with a weird head, and tool that looks like a variant of a torx bit. The head gasket was about 100 dollars, and is slightly thicker than stock. It definantly looks far different than stock, I can upload a picture later.

Please tell more about these;

-Crane cams (I will post specs later)
-Crower Trimetal Rods

40IDFs? You might run out or carb at top end.

Are you planning on a test build to determine valve to piston clearances? I would recommend it.

I used play doh on the pistons at the valve cut out to determine both axial and radial clearances by turning the engine over.

Cam specs -

Intake: 246 duration .390 lift
Exhaust: 236 duration .370 lift

My machinist has a connection with crane, and had them make these. Same with the pistons, his exact specs and dimensions. He has set up so many 2.0’s with these venolias that the valve clearence is spot on.

Crower rods - I am not sure of the origin, I stole them from my racing parts motor, (long story), did some research and found they are trimetal, and worth new about 1500 bucks! They are super light, and beautiful, here is a picture

The carbs are jetted and have previously been run on a similar setup, i have an AEM wideband so i can moniter if I do begin to lean out, dont think I will though. Im sure I will have to fiddle with some jetting.

The machinist has a dyno, and says he expects 150ish wheel once its all set up. That sounds a little high, and he swears by it, but we will see. I will let you know when i get it dynoed myself!!!
