Textured Coating or Mudflaps for Rocker Protection?

Post by kmoses »

I just removed my rocker panels that were repainted last August and was amazed at how many rock chips there were. Looking at the rear rockers I found the paint also highly pitted. I figure there are two options, spray the rockers with a texturing coating like 3M Rock Guard then repaint or install mudflaps. Are there mudflaps that fit the Spider and how is the best way to mount them? If you have used a texturing coating or installed mudflaps, please let me know how you liked the end result.

I’ve been thinking about mud flaps for awhile too, and am looking forward to hearing ideas from the group.

Refinish and cover with helicopter tape. Also called 'leading edge' tape (leading edge of heli-rotor blades), 'surface guard' tape, and likely other names. Used on most any forward facing surface on the racecars I used to work on. Without it, the paint would have been completely gone after 500 miles at places like Michigan, Fontana, Indy. If it can survive a day at 240+ mph, it'll do for your occasional jaunts to 70mph.

I put on mud flaps and have been really happy with the results. It keeps the dirt off and makes it nice when washing the car.

Redcars would you be able to snap and post a few pictures of how you fastened them to your car?

I was not aware of "leading edge" tape but it looks very promising for this application. After googling the term I found it carried by Pegasus Auto Racing Supplies, they normally carry only high quality products. Thanks for the information SP3.

Here is how Abarth did it. Looks like textured black undercoating was what they used.
