Price to ship a car in 2017

Post by FiatJim »

I am researching the cost to ship my car from central NY to Ohio.
I have started getting bids via UShip,.... all the bids (7+) seem high. In the $1200 - $1400 range.

I had the car shipped 2-3 years ago and I don't recall paying that much. :?:

Is this a reasonable amount?

Should be well under $1000 for that trip. More like $700 range assuming you are talking open carrier. There are sites where you put it out for bid to private carriers.

Thanks Jeff,

I started the "Bid" process late yesterday,.. starting offer $1,478.00. Enclosed trailer.
As of 20 minutes (7:00pm EST) the pricing is at $638.00 +tax = $704.00.
Now, how to evaluate the QUALITY of the private companies bidding,...?

U-Ship site indicated that around $550 - $575 is "average".

i used uship last year to ship car from upstate new york to chicago. total cost was $600. Car was delivered in one day. they all start expensive and go down fast. I spoke to couple of the brokers and all swear the other guys are the crooks. :D overall i think you're safe with any of them that have good review. I'll look to see who I used and pass it on

I've had good luck twice with shipacardirect. They do contract it out to independent drivers but both times I've been happy.

I've also noticed it highly depends on your proximity to a larger city. If they need to drive an hour outside to a small town they will charge more. I paid roughly $550 from Minneapolis to Detroit and closer to $700 from rural MN to Detroit

Those prices sound right. My friend on Cape Cod was charged just about a grand from Michigan to Cape Cod for his Model T.

Thanks. Shipping from middle of NY ( between Binghamton & Syracuse) to Columbus, OH.
The lowest bid I got was $868.00. With applicable taxes, the price was nearly $930.00

I just had a new BMW M4 shipped from MOBILE ALABAMA to SANDUSKY OHIO and paid 1200.00 for an enclosed trailer and open would have been 750.00.

Well, perhaps I am being a little greedy? Perhaps the $1K amount is OK?

My first auction at UShip ended. I did not select a company. I've relisted it using the "name your price" option. We will see. I went with $600.00,... figuring I will move up as the bidders move down. I hope.

This time of year is more expensive. Northern snowbirds ship cars south.

A car going north at this time can be cheap and they will pick up anything to have a load back north.

That is a very good point. I had not considered that. I had been thinking: "Gee, the year is coming to an end and I/We need to make some $$ before the new year begins".. DOH!
