Electrical short in front left, right rear corner lights...

Post by elston36 »

I know it's likely a bad ground, but need help to find it. '82 Spider 124, keeps blowing the fuse (#8?). Left front marker light and right rear tail and marker lights go out.

Thanks,
Donald

Just yesterday had the same problem. In my case it was the dash panel dimmer rheostat switch going to earth. On my 73 1800 the power goes via it. Again in my case it was a yellow/red wire.

Generally this term refers to a "ground" connection that is not making good contact. This would not cause a fuse to blow.
A wire that is touching ground that shouldn't causes a fuse to blow.

I think fuse 8 also has on it the trunk light wire and the cigar light wire. The trunk light wire is a common source of your problem.
The bottom of fuse 9 should have 2 yellow/black wires on it one is for the dash associated lights and one is for the tail and marker plate lights. I would remove them one at a time and see which one is causing the fuse to blow.

Hope this helps

i'm the farthest thing from an expert but on my 82 the po sloppily installed aftermarket junk radio that for some reason was causing the same problem, plus shorting interior light and cigarette lighter. removed radio, replaced fuse and now just enjoy the sweet sounds of engine revs and wind

Sounds like a hot to ground issue. Does the fuse blow as soon as you turn the car on or only when turning the lights, turn signals, brakes or putting in reverse. This sure does sound like a hot to ground issue. On the 82 a PO pushed a copper wire through the loom under the dash creating a hot to ground situation. Another fiat owner said they had the same thing so maybe the folks at the factory at some point thought it was a good idea to attach a wire loom to a metal support with a copper wire. Look for lose wires that are frayed or connection points that could touch metal creating a surge in amps and blown fuse.
Buon giro a tutti! - enjoy the ride!
