Rare find Abarth exhaust - NOS

Post by spiderdan »

So I'm doing the usual retired guy thing, when not on this site, looking up Spider stuff on Ebay and Kijiji. I find a local ad on Kijiji for a NOS Abarth exhaust system for the 1400/1600.
Was there the next day, confirmed it was real and never installed. It has a little bit of surface rust but it's in great shape. It even has two original muffler clamps.
Although I don't really need a new exhaust (yet) I will have it installed when I get my trany redone this summer. Almost to pretty to use.
Never seen them with serial plates. I can't believe I found this locally.
Sometimes life is good!

I'm expecting a little quieter than my current one muffler Ansa setup.
Guess I'll have to paint my hood flat black!

Congrats. I have one on my '71 that I bought as an NOS piece like this in about 2007 (I think I got it before I actually had the car in my possession) . I also have one that I pulled off a car I bought as a parts car from a friend...he'd sourced it as an NOS unit also, but in the late 1990s & driven it about 10-15k I suppose until other stuff put the car down...still very solid. My personal impression of these is the sound is wonderful but I have a hard time feeling or believing it flows any better than a standard system. Perhaps reducing it to a 2 baffle vs. 3 system would be better in that respect, but I have it on a stock 1608 and it has removed the desire to have a radio in that car since 2007. Enjoy!

LOL
$114 in 1970 equals $730.06 in 2017. ($1006.50 Cdn)

Could have been worse, he could have asked to be paid in USD!

yknow, I don't even remember what I paid for mine in 2007. I doubt it was a shocking number. It was one of those nice purchases where it arrived & was even nicer than I had anticipated and I felt like I would have been content paying even more. The other one, of course, was free with the car it was bolted to! Toss up on which was the better value, i guess.

Reminds me of when Norm of "Cheers" fame was asked what was the best beer in the world?
His answer was "free beer of course"!
I would assume the free one was the better value Chris.

Almost to pretty to install, Maybe I'll just hang it on the wall.

Maybe someone can educate me on the difference/similarities between Ansa and Abarth in relation to exhaust systems/mufflers.
Are they/were they the same company?
I tried Wiki, Google and can't really figure it out.

What was the inside diameter of the stock pipes....? Correct me if I'm wrong here but I thought the stock was 1 3/4 inch inside diameter.
I currently have 2" inside from a jobber shop and Mark sells a system that is 2 1/4 " inside diameter.
Any idea what the inside diameter of this Abarth pipe is?

I'd expect there are probably a number of different "Abarth" 124 exhausts that were done. I was never of the impression that this one had any real relation to what was used on the CSA other than the name, but that's OK.

Free one, maybe? really is a toss up. For a while I ran that one (with a slight extension added at the downpipe) on my '72 Coupe and now it's on a vehicle layover again. The upshot of my friend's car from which it was harvested is that the car leaked oil profusely, so the exhaust had very nice rust protection! Gotta love those cars that are shiny on top, full of nice parts but rusty (rust under a coating of oil) & leaky all over, eh?

Use it! The world does not need wall hangers. Yeah, it's pretty to look at & all, but where it excels is the mellow but sporty exhaust note.

pretty sure it's same as stock diameter, right? large diameter exhausts outside of real racing applications for market items is a relatively new phenomenon on these cars.

I think it's same as stock, 44mm (1 3/4 inch). When my mechanic (Canadan) saw it, he didn't see any problems with it.
Which should mean a simple and straight forward install.
I am a dreamer....
I will measure it to confirm the next time I head up to the cottage. With the ducky weather here lately, I won't be going up there to get the Fiat out anytime soon.

You lucky bastige, Spiderdan. Actually, you totally deserve it. :) I can't wait to hear and see it on your car.

As an English teacher, I have to say I approve. A bit wordy, but at least they grammar is right. Maybe it's the artifice of translation; the French is good, too. Nowadays it would be something like LoFlo muffler without nearly so much panache.

What I like best is the series of "World Champion" gongs in Italian, French, and English. Totally intelligible. Then we get to the German one: "Weldmeister" - literal translation would "World Master." Uh oh. There they go again! :)

Cheers,
