starter

Post by fiat218 »

i put a reduction starter in the 70, im not sure if this is all related to my problem as far as wires
one wire is a female end which spades into the starter, i think there was 2 more heavy wires in which went onto the starter bolt
i did that and other then that i added a wire from the positive side of coil to my choke, nothing eles was done as to wires
my starter is touching the steering unit, and i need to cut off that nub, ( does that have anything to do with it) prolly not but i

i can turn the key off and the engine continues to run as if the key was on as in normal
why ? when i shut the key off and the engine did not stop running

Jim,

I don't know much about the wiring on the early spiders, but you might try disconnecting the connector on the back of the ignition switch once the car is started to see if it continues to run. If it does, then the points are somehow getting power, even through the key is off. You said you had a wire going from the coil to the electric choke? I'd remove that as well. A picture of the starter showing the wiring might also be useful. Do you know if your car has the dual point distributor? I think there is a relay involved with that system that maybe is shorted out?
