70 fenders on a 77....Can it be done??

Post by Akgriffith »

I have a 1977 Spider virtually rust free. However it does have collision damage on the front right fender. I also have a 1970 Spider with a completely rusted out floor and inner rockers. Can I put the front fenders from the 70 on the 77? Will the holes for the bumper line up (I'd be using the 1970 bumper). Has anyone tried this? I prefer the look of the 70 front bumper and blinker, so this would be a good retro fit if it can be done.

1) Pretty sure a 70 front quarter fender will fit on a 77, but the bumper holes/ turn signals will be different.
2) If your going to go through the trouble of replacing one front fender, I would consider swapping the whole front clip from the 70 onto the 77. Though the bumper bracket location are placed on the inside of the lower front crossmember pre 74 so the holes may not line up with the 77 front end. That being said you could weld closed those holes and cut new ones. No quick solution to this one...

I never thought of using the whole front clip. I'll do some measuring and see if that would work.

I assume you know the fenders are welded on, not just bolted?

Yeah they are welded on. As far as using the whole front clip, that would probably work but it's more than I feel comfortable taking on. I think I'll get the collision damage repaired and either go bumperless or get one of those bumper conversion kits.

I helped remove a spider front fender assembly once and let me tell you it was an amazing pain in the ass. Those things are welded on to the body in more places than you realize. Take a careful look at how they are attached before you decide to take this job on.
