Ignition Switch Repair Supplement

Post by kmoses »

I repaired/refurbished the contacts in my ignition switch using the following guide:
http://www.njfiats.org/joomla/images/st ... epair.html
My only deviation from the directions was not removing the white disk (there is no need to) and the screws to use when putting the contact assembly back together.
I found that 0-80x1/2" screws will fit without drilling the rivet holes oversize if you counterbore the lug side 1/8" OD x .050" deep for the screw head. With the head recessed there is no problem fitting the retaining ring. Also, the nuts for this size screw fit in the stock notch and if indexed properly, do not evtend beyond the O.D. of the contact block. I was suprised to find these small screws at my local hardware store. My switch contacts were pitted and after sanding with 1000 grit and reassembly, my car starts better and my dash lights are brighter. I have added relays for for fog lights, high & low beam & fuel pump.

Nice job. I am a fan of repairing the Sipea switches.

I have 2 styles of Sipea ignition switches. The one you have has the "int" terminal in the middle of the switch. With this style the white disk is held in by a rivet that passes through the 1/2 of the switch it is mounted to. The other style Sipea switch has the "int" terminal on the side similar to terminal 50 or 16. this style has the white disk held in by a rivet that passes through both halves of the switch. This rivet has to be removed to get the haves separated.

Thank you for that information, I was wondering why they removed the white disk in the instructions I followed. I have repaired two contact blocks and neither of them needed the disk removed. I was going to just purchase a new switch assembly but when I talked to one of our vendors, he said I would be better off if I could fix the Sipea unit.
