Temporary Horn Button or No Driving

Post by Nitrate »

1981,2000. I need to setup a temporary horn button. I can get a switch from the auto store but I am at a loss on the wiring end of things. I think there are two wires involved a Violet/Black and a Gray/Black. I'm grounded until I can get the horn working. Can someone walk me thru this? Electric work is not my strong suit. Thanks RB

I should mention that I modified an early steering wheel to work on my 81'. I installed the pin that allows the directional to work. This setup does not allow the standard horn to work. I just need a simple circuit to activate the horn using a dash mounted push button switch. Could someone tell me how to do that? Thanks Rich B.

Don't you have a wire that come in the center of the wheel steering?

I hooked one up about 20 years ago. My horn button stopped working, and I had to have
one to pass safety inspection. If I remember correctly, it hooks to a relay that's accessable
by removing the glove box.

If I found the Gray/Black and Violet/Black that are attached to the original horn contacts in the steering column and put a switch between them would that work? RB

Correction. Not a switch between them but a switch in ONE of the wires. A push button switch. RB

The switch goes between those wires. You can test by touching them together. But some state inspection agencies require that the horn button be where the manufacturer placed it.

Thanks for the replies. Anyone know the best place to access the Violet/Black wire? An area with a slight bit of elbow room? RB

There is only 1 wire for the horn. You ground it to activate the horn. Washuko send me a momo horn button with 2 legs. I put one wire under the steering bolt for ground. And attach both to the switch.
Picture to come.

I don't think connecting the grey/black and black/violet wire to a switch will work.
The black/violet wire is from the horn relay coil and goes to the slip ring on the steering wheel hub. The grey/black wire connects the slip ring to the horn button. The black/violet wire needs to be switched to ground for the horn to work. There are 2 connectors that come out of the steering column the one with 8 cavities has the black/violet wire in it. It is usually located behind the instrument cluster above the fuse panel.
