'79 vs '81 gearing difference

Post by nwmike »

I've had an '81 spider for many years and recently bought a '79 spider 2000 from a friend who needed to sell it quick. One thing I've noticed is the '81 is quicker in that it travels farther and faster from a stop at the same rpm. So what is different? Is it the transmission or the rear end gearing that's different? I know the fuel injection on the '81 vs carburation on the '79 makes a difference in power, but this seems to be a gearing difference. Does anyone know?

The FI added a lot of horsepower! And much smoother low end torque and response.

If all is stock then there is no gearing difference between 1979 and 81.

Vandor, is that true of BOTH rear end AND the 5spd. transmission?

Thanks,

Yes. The manual states a different 5th gear ratio for 1979-80 (I think), but I have not actually seen that in real life.
