Power window cable

Post by Nitrate »

1981. 2000. How do you prevent the cable unraveling off the grooved drum when your threading the cables around the pulleys? Rich B.

From what I remember, you install the cable around the pulley with all the adjustment off. After that you guide the cable around the drum with the window switch and tight the adjustment to remove slack. Do that with the window out.

So you don't pre wind the cable around the drum? Then prevent the cable from unraveling, install the whole winder, and then thread the cable around the pulleys? I'm really lost on this one and could use some experienced advise. Car can't be driven until I get this fixed. Rich B.

You pre-wind them but after that you can't keep the tension. So you install the cable and with both end, you keep pulling on the cable while someone activate the switch. One side will pull and the other one push. When the cable that push start pulling, you are at the end of the cycle. Tight the cable with the pulley and after that install your window.

Orford, Thank you for taking the time to reply to my question. I think I understand the principle of how the winder works thanks to your explanation. That is a big help. As to actually performing the work well that will involve some trial and error. If anyone else has an alternate plan please advise me. Thank you, Rich B.

I believe there are some posts about this on here somewhere. You must keep the cables from unraveling or its a real pain. Tape or some vice grips to hold the cables before you remove it. Then put just do the reverse to reinstall.
