Someone was asking about under hood insulation recently but I can't find the post. I finally got it done a few months ago and meant to post the results but never got around to it. So better late than never...
Mine's a 76. Had nothing under the hood. I got the pads from AR. They are big and need to be trimmed to fit. I had hoped I could tuck the edges under the flanges but there was no way. Some areas there's almost an inch clearance but in other places the edges close up to almost nothing. So even dry fitting the pads it didn't work and if I tried it with the adhisive applied it would have been a disaster. So the edges are exposed which isn't ideal but I can live with it. I remember someone else saying that they "shaved" the foam along the edges. If I had it to do over I would consider trying that.
Anyway I was concerned about over spray with the adhesive, and the odor and so forth. Somewhere I read about then found double sided adhesive tape as a substitute. In the end I had to apply a layer of tape to the underside of the pads and another layer of tape to the hood, so that when I applied the pads they went tape to tape.
Here's the stuff I used. The 2" wide roll:

Worked great. Here's a picture I took yesterday. They've been on for 4 months or so.
