I just pulled my A/C off an 83 Spider and took lots of pictures to help the new owner of the A/C do the re-install.
I made him a Powerpoint from lots of pictures , circles and arrows on the back of each one....( if you know that reference ). If this is of any use in this discussion --hmm-- how would I get this Powerpoint to people? Maybe send me your email if you want my pictures and I will attach in an email?
Removal was a lot of work -- figuring it out as you go along. My pictures may be helpful for installation If this is useful please ask and I will try to help. Also, I don't use any Picasso or Shutterbug services-- if anyone can tell me how I can post all of these pictures I am happy to do that too.
Since I saw what it takes to remove the unit, for installs I would certainly test the compressor and all units for leaks before going to the trouble. Some parts might be easy to troubleshoot after install, but I'd hate to have to pull hoses or other parts after installing everything and something leaks or doesn't work.

The wiring on the link below is different from mine. It shows a potentiometer in the system, whereas mine has a thermostat. Hot wire comes to the thermostat and then to the control switch. The wiring on this shows it going to a electronic medial, which I do not have. Also I don't have the relays shown.
So, there had to be different, after market units, that had some significant differences in wiring.
I had mine re-charged last year with the R134. It worked fairly well. However, last week it stopped completely. No power to the control. I was told that there is a safety switch, to protect the compressor from low pressure.
Any thoughts?
Also, when it was re-charged, the shop told me that it was unnecessary to change the receiver/drier. I've since been told that it MUST be changed.
Any thoughts?

You can test for low R134a by disconnecting the compressor clutch wire from the pressure switch and temporarily hook up 12 volts to the clutch. If it starts engaging then most likely you have a leak. It is best to have a gauge set to confirm. You could also try to inject some green fluorescent dye on the compressor suction side using the kits available from the auto parts stores. My experience on leaks on older units has been the compressor body large o-ring seals and the evaporator under the dash (the water drain hose outlet will glow from the dye).
If a leak is confirmed you will need to replace the receiver/dryer after the leaking component has been replaced. Then the system will need to be evacuated with a vacuum pump to again check for leaks and then charged with the R134a/PAG oil. You may want to have someone else do that if inexperienced but it is not expensive.

Thanks Warren. I'll take it in and have it checked out. I can test, but then for me to do the fix, may not be in my best interest. Luckily I know a good shop.
