Front overhang of Convertible top

1981. 2000. The overhanging lip on the front of my convertible top seems to be creating quite a bit of turbulence and noise. There isn't a noticeable air leak but the wind hitting the 1/4 to 3/8" overhang makes good amount of noise at 60MPH. The canvas piping does not blend in 100% smooth with the top of the windshield frame and the air catches it. Am I asking too much for the convertible to be quiet at 60 - 65 MPH? RB

Are you missing the rubber seal between the top frame and window?

Not so much an air leak, more like air turbulence that you can hear, like putting your hand out the window.

Is it a newly installed top?

There's a chance that it's not properly seated on the bow.

Nitrate, I think you expect too much. Top up, top down, it doesn't make any difference on my car. It's just as noisy on the highway.

These days, convertible tops are much more aerodynamic and most have inner liners. And the transition from the leading edge of the top to the windshield is much smoother.

I guess it could depend on your definition of quiet. I find mine very quiet compared to other convertibles of that era and even some modern ones.

If one of the latches however is not set right it can get very noisy.

Does the noise diminish when you pull the handle on the front bow down? If so then the front latches may be worn, the gasket may need replacing or the front bow itself may be distorted and no longer matching the curve of the windshield.

Post a picture of how your convertible top fits against the windshield frame. The sewn on trim should not flip upwards. It should lay flat against the windshield frame.

There will always be a lot of noise from the convertible tops. If they're not stretched properly, they'll vibrate in the wind no matter what you do. The newer convertibles have insulated, multi-layer tops that minimize the noise.
