Replacing Vinyl Top

Post by Twangs »

Hi everyone,

I know this has probably been answered to death, so I apologize in advance - I've had some trouble finding exact answers to my questions on this forum..

I own a 1984 Pininfarina Spider with a tan top original to the car. Recently, while closing the top during some cold weather, the back window cracked. I wasn't too heart broken, as the top had some mildew on it and was showing it's age - It was on my list of things to upgrade since I bought the car a few years ago.

Would any of you experts be willing to give me a little advice as to where I should buy my replacement top from? I am leaning towards Vick's

How do you feel about the quality of this product? Also, would you go with the vinyl or the cloth top?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

I bought my canvas top from Autoberry and couldn't be happier.

Robins Convertable Tops are the best!
And any quality top that you buy from a retail supply will probably come from them.
If the car is a 'keeper', go cloth, and get a zippered back window.

Tops On Lines full kits include the pry tool, tension cables, instructions and adhesive making them a good deal. Get the canvas if you have a garage queen that will never be parked where it can get dirty of have tree sap fall on it otherwise get the very easy to keep clean vinyl.

To me a canvas top with tree sap that's attracting road dust embedded in it looks pretty bad and is very hard to clean and make new looking again.

Autoberry cloth top on mine, and i couldn't be happier. I do keep it covered when in the garage because the dust does show, but it's easy enough to clean if you keep it clean.

Was the zippered back window a "standard" option that was offered? Do you have a picture?

Autoberry was good for me. Cloth. Haartz. Stafast. Make sure you order a pair of wire cables too.

Probably best to go to Robbins Tops and get the information direct from the source.

The zippered back window was a custom job. Lee Putman owns the car being referenced but I don't recall where he had the work done. I do think he had to have it done before install though... so keep that in mind.

I'm sure you could find the post via search term zipper or soothing similar.
