Came across this vid today:

It's from 2013 but I hadn't seen it before. Or maybe I did and forgot (thanks middle age!!). Anyway, it's fun to watch so I though I would share.
A race-prepped Fiat 124 Spider is mixing it up at a track about two hours from where I live that hosts vintage racing a few times a year. (My daughters and I were skiing at the top of the mountain you can see in the background just over a month ago!)
Maybe we can get some local guys to check out a vintage racing event. There's also a big event mid-summer with vintage F1 cars, '60s Ferraris (even a GTO!) and lots of good stuff. Big-time money invested.
In the vid above the dicing with the yellow car is great. I'm not sure what the car is. It's a yellow fast-back with a green stripe, but it doesn't look like a Lotus (Elan or Europa), nor an MG or a Healey. Maybe it's a Triumph Spitfire GT6 that's been seriously modified at the back. It's definitely got a bit more grunt. I dunno. The Fiat does very well under braking, but doesn't have quite enough ooomph, especially with terminal speed at the end of the straight. There's a BMW 2002 in the beginning and mid-way through making a come-back plus an Abarth with the rear deck lid open, and, of course, American muscle roars through a couple of times. If only there were an Alfa GTA. They really turn my crank.
The Youtube handle is "jacexpo069". Is that anyone we know?
Cheers,
phaetn
EDIT:
I came across this at the VARAC web site:
You can see a lot of the cars I mentioned including the blue and white Spider.

One of my home tracks as well. I believe the yellow car is a Marcos.

FIAT driver needs help. Many times it sounds like he's coasting, in neutral, from corner entry to the apex (or further).

Wow, I've never heard of the Unipower GT. A quick Wikipedia search showed a really cool car. I wonder what would have happened had they ever fit a bigger engine than the 1275cc Cooper S model.SP3 wrote:

I think the Fiat driver is coasting on corner entry mainly when there are other cars around on especially hanging around on the inside. I could be wrong, but I think he's more planted later. In any event, it still looks like a ton of fun!
I think I mentioned this to you before, kilrwail, but Ian Johns is like a surrogate father to me and I used to go to a lot of PCA track events back in the early '90s; I drove his car signed off solo (yellow run group?? blue??). He was an instructor and I'm not sure if eventually he became chief for Rennsport. This is back when he had the (essentially race prepped) C4 with the supercharger with a full cage, seats, slicks, RUF package, etc. The engine work was from an outfit in Tennessee. It was dynoed at 500+bhp at the rear wheels, so I'm not sure how that works given that the fronts were pulling, too, or how that would work for engine HP. A number considerably north of that, presumably. Later he swapped out the supercharger for a turbo. I was never fast, but that car was a beast and would rattle the teeth from my head while simultaneously putting on the biggest grin on my face ever. It made a beautiful popping sound and would shoot a one and a half foot flame when backing off. That car really came into its own in the wet when all the other 911s were heading into the rhubarb with lift-off oversteer; the C4, meanwhile, dug its fingernails in with the front wheels and clawed its way out of corners with power-on slides. Can you tell I'm fondly reminiscing? I mainly went with him to Mt. Tremblant, Mosport, and a couple of times at the Glen. Those were the days: early 20s and a fast car.kilrwail wrote:One of my home tracks as well.
I wasn't around at track days by the time Ian bought got the GT3 or the Lotus Exige, but we still talk cars a lot when I'm there for dinner. He's in his early '80s now so he doesn't drive much except for his WRX.
Cheers,
