Transplanting early lighter, courtesy light, flasher, to the 2000 model

Post by Nitrate »

1981. 2000. I really prefer the early speaker grill, lighter, courtesy light, and flasher look. The speaker grill face fits my 81' 2000 model, I already have that. Now I need the early Lighter, Flasher, and Courtesy light. I'm only interested in having the Lighter and Courtesy Light functional. I will relocate the 81' flasher switch under the dash to avoid the wiring headache of trying to make the early Flasher work. Is this a very difficult conversion? Unless I'm missing something the Cigar Lighter, and Courtesy Light looks like a simple plug in conversion. The openings for the original equipment will have to be reworked also. Anyone have any of the parts I'll need (Lighter, Courtesy Light, and Non Working Flasher with Mounting Box. Thanks, RB

The map light is the same up to 1983. The cigarette lighter too, maybe the element looks a bit different, but I'd think the housing is the same size.

The lighter is available at just about every parts store in town where I live.

I cannot find any type of ring to unscrew in back of the lighter. It can't come out of the rear because the green housing has a moulded ring that seats on the console face. Looks like the light that illuminates the lighter would have to come off because there is no way it can pass thru the front, opening not big enough. I have a feeling something changed on the 1981. RB

Then the whole barrel unscrews. Some have a key that you insert in the front instead of the lighter so you can unscrew the entire center from the front.

On this model the knurled retainer is built into the barrel instead of being a separate part:
