Cigar Lighter Removal
1981. 2000. It looks like the small light housing that illuminates the green surround on the lighter needs to come off in order to remove the lighter. How does the the light housing come off? I thought it just slid off but that does not seem to be the case. Does it snap off from plastic tabs? I don't want to use too much force. Anybody? RB

I think not.

My memory is a bit hazy, but I believe there are 2 pieces that are screwed together. Either an inner and an outer piece, or there is a ring on the back side that unscrews.

Shut off the power, disconnect the wires from the back and unscrew the ring or barrel from behind and the rest pulls out through the front.
Some have a separate threaded ring holding the barrel on while others have a threaded barrel.
There is a special tool to insert in the front of the socket but I usually give up trying to find it and use whatever is handy such as a fat finger.

I can not see any type of unscrewing arraignment on my 1981 2000. The flasher had a ring to unscrew but I see nothing like that on the lighter. I have a feeling the 1981 model has a different setup. RB

It's entirely possible that a PO replaced the OE lighter with another, but as DieselSpider states, every popular version simply unscrews.
There's no separate mechanism; the entire barrel unscrews. Just hold the lighter receptacle stationary from the front and twist the entire rear shell CCW. Once its apart, you'll go "aHA".
