Custom IDF air cleaner

Post by hwmotts »

I got really tired of the two air cleaners with 8 clips so I decided to make my own with only two bolts holding the top on. It uses a K&N filter for a Datsun 240/260/280Z (part # E-2880). It is made out of 4 aluminum plates 1/8" thick. The top plate is held on by two bolts underneath the air cleaner and between the two carbs. Unfortunately I'm thinking of not using the IDF's and using DCOE's instead on my '71 flat hood left hand drive spider. I just have to decide how to get rid of the brake booster. Anyways below are the pics.

Everything was working so well, I had to flush mount a "Fiat Abarth" emblem in the top.

Please note the two bolts that hold on the top of the cleaner in the picture below.

i almost see myself. ive collected hotwheels too. about 5,000. i had a room covered with them, my ol name was htwhlsrey. also had an air cleaner for my ol 40 idf,s back in 1979, that used that 240 z element. bayless used to sell it. thought about making another but got rid of those webers instead.thats a sweet set up you put together.

Thats a nice set up you got there. Do you still have emissions testing in your state? You'll need more than some old moss to block off that fuel pump hole.

Have you run this yet? It seems that you need to add vent holes in the bottom plate for the idle circuit, but maybe the idf70's are differnt then the 13/15's. Looks good!

i too, am impressed with the detail and attention paid to the fabrication. Like the recess for the badge.

You should market this puppy. It is a great looking piece of work.
Would love to have it, but not a fabricator.

That's Awesome! There have been others that removed the booster. Just search for the posts.

I don't think he's posted on here in a while, but to mount DCOE's you also need to re-locate the master cylinder.
