Need help! 82 Spider

Post by 82spy »

Hello folks! I was a member of this forum for several years, several years ago. When we first bought our 82 Spider and were in the process of "fixing it up" I was a regular here. We bought the car when he was 15 and he's 33 now, so it's been a while since I've been on. He has used the Spider on a somewhat regular basis, but of late, children, car seats, etc. have made the Spider a dust collector--especially since his employer now supplies him a company car. So, it's time to fix it up again to sell.

Problem is, the a/c bracket is broken. The broken part rattles against something else down there and sounds like a small cowbell ringing. When my local mechanic discovered this I contacted all the folks I used to deal with (and discovered some had gone out of business or been absorbed), they all said, "Send me a pic so I can get you the right one." So, I sent pics. Now, they all say, "A/c wasn't factory installed," which I was fully aware of, "We don't have any of those." Bummer! Ok, there had to be SOME similarity between them! They all did the same thing, hang a compressor off the side of the engine! It's pot metal, so unrepairable.......

Here's the broken part......https://www.flickr.com/photos/140976904@N04/ (I hope you can access them)

If you know of a source, of if you have any a/c brackets let me know immediately!

Thanks in advance!

My first stop would be a local muffler shop to have it welded :?:

Contact forum member "SpiderParts" (ChesapeakeSpiders@verizon.net) as he is a great parts source on the East Coast. You can also try Lenny at Auto-Italia (lenny@auto-italia.com) as he is great parts source on the West Coast. One of these guys will have your part. You can also try Midwest Bayless, too, as they deal with recycled parts. Make sure to send them the link to the photos you provided above.

In my opinion, it is better to have a good used replacement part rather than trying to find someone to weld that casting. Welding isn't bad, it's just trying to find someone who will do it correctly and make sure to keep the alignment straight.
