Solved. Speedo Cable or Transmission Where is the noise coming from

Post by Nitrate »

I removed the wood trim around the gear shift lever and the plate underneath to get full access to the transmission from the top. I drove and listened for the noise with a rubber tube. The car made the noise but it did not seem to be coming from the transmission or bell housing area. Great now what? I put the listening tube down and just listened to the noise. It seemed to be coming from the left side of the dash. I checked the alternator but no luck, it was OK. Driving home the thought occurred to me: " What about wheel bearings?". I jacked up the front end and spun the left front tire and went to the right side and did the same. Big difference between the two. Very rough sounding left front bearing. Found it. Question now is wether to do both left and right side bearings. Anyone have recommendations? RB

Normally the right (passenger side) gets beat up because the roads are worse on that side, but anyway, a really good idea to do both at the same time, since it is not expensive, and the second side will take about 1/4 the time of the first after you have done it!

Glad to hear you found it! Change both inner and outer bearings and races on both sides.
