Power to stereo

Post by Spiderstu »

Since my 1980 Spider has no accessory position on the ignition, where would be the best place to run a power wire for the new stereo so that the stereo shuts off when the key is off? I have the memory wire connected directly to the battery.

The best way to solve this issue is to use the door chime switch in your ignition barrel as your simulated ACC switch to switch on the stereo. In current stereo's usually the Red wire is the switch wire (ACC) and the The yellow wire will need the hot at all times 12V. Unplug the door chime connector, connect the red wire to one of the terminal and the other terminal to 12V. That way as soon as you put the key in the stereo will be on, you can listen to music without having your ignition on.

(Assuming you have disconnected the annoying door chime function??)

Under the steering wheel and dash, there is a plastic connector.with a group of wires coming from the ignition switch. Where the wires feed into the connector there is room for a probe to test the wires for power. Using your test light poke the wires in the connector and find a wire that only lights your tester when the ignition switch is in the 'on' position. Use that wire to power your stereo.

Hope this helps,
Dave.
