OK I Found the Oil Leak . Now What?
1981. 2000. The rear section of the block on the exhaust side had a light coating of oil. I determined the leak was coming from the lower rear corner of the Cam Housing (not the Cam Cover) where it mates with the Head. I don't know it it is technically called the head but I'm not sure what else to call it. There is a metal reenforsed gasket between the two. I'd like to replace that gasket. It looks like that involves dissengaging the timing wheel from the belt, removing the distributor, and possibly changing the valve tappet clearance. So how involved is removing this Exhaust Cam Housing? What do I need to be careful about, what do I need to keep an eye on. I'm pretty competent with a wrench but don't want to get over my head. That leak is driving me nuts. Thanks, RB

Are you sure it isn't coming from one of the exhaust manifold studs? Some inexplicably go through to the oil and are known to leak. b=

Ah, OK...now I see your post lower down. Sorry for the rinse and repeat. Yes, it's no big deal to remove the cam tower from the head and replace the gasket. Yes, you'll have to readjust all your shim clearances. Be sure and use the newer Payen gaskets with the silicone bead built right in. That's the hot setup. Of course while you're there replace the tensioner bearing, cam belt and water pump. I'd also do belts and hoses and have the radiator spiffed up at a shop. b=
