Brake bleeding

Post by Nitrate »

1981 2000. What is the brake bleeding sequence on this model ? Should the rear end be jacked higher than the front of the car? nitrate

You need to raise the car by the rear axle so the compensator doesn't undo your good work.

I actually bleed with the car on the ground.

Start with rear passenger corner, then rear driver, then passenger, then driver.

Conventional wisdom is to start at the caliper furthest away from the master cylinder and then move to the next furthest away and so on. I'm not sure that it really matters where you start, but this sequence works so I keep doing mine that way as well. I bleed mine on the ground too (just like TOPLESSEXPAT), and with a helper you can bleed the whole system in about fifteen minutes.

Vacuum pump works better than a helper. You don't have to share the beer afterwards either. Win, win!

Thanks guys. Just one thing, do you jack rear of the BODY up or do you jack it up under the REAR AXEL?

Axle. If you jack the body the suspension will drop and the compensator will shut off flow of brake fluid to the rear brakes.

Place your jack (with a block of wood) under rear axle and lift from there. Also, I highly recommend you place jack stands under the axle while your working there. As long as the rear axle is elevated, you should be able to bleed the rear brakes.

Just to be clear, put the block off wood at the differential and jack it from the differential.

An alternative to a wood block: drill a 7/8 hole in the center of a hockey puck. Protects the drain plug, cushions and grabs the diff. They also fit nicelyinto the center of an HF jack pad, making a nice surface for lifting. I use an undrilled puck for the front.
