Automatic Wear Take Up Clutch Cable
1981 2000. The official 1981 Fiat Spider 2000 Owners Manual says " Clutch. Mechanically controlled , automatic wear take up no pedal free travel. What's up with that? Most repair manuals I have looked at refer to the adjustment procedure of shortening or lengthening the cable so you have 1" of free travel. RB

Re: Automatic Wear Take Up Clutch Cable
Have not seen a Fiat self adjusting clutch pedal yet but typically they have a quadrant or rack gear attached to the pedal that pulls the cable back with zero slack using a light spring and that allows the pedal to move about an inch before it engages the gear attached to the clutch cable. My first recollection of them was on 1980's Dodge Omni and Caravans which had the sliding rack gear inside the clutch pedals.

Thanks for your reply. I can't see very well under the dash to verify a wheel arrangement. I just went ahead and adjusted it. Really would like to hear from some experienced owners or forum director on this self adjust thing. RB

Only issue I had with mine on the Dodge/Plymouths was that it somtimes skipped a tooth while it was self adjusting and sometimes caught folks unawares when it reached the end of adjustment otherwise you just drove for 90,000 or so miles, replaced the clutch and reset the self adjuster back to the starting position.
