Weber Towers / Trumpets

Installed new Weber Towers today , got these from a supplier in the U.K…Initial startup the engine sounded like it could breath and was far more responsive…Diden't get to test drive as I was battling 35dg heat in blazing sun so was in desperate need of a cold Stella Artois or two.
Overall pretty happy but will wait until I get a chance to test drive…Waiting on fuel cut off valve , fuel filter and pressure regulator to arrive so will post when fitted with an update on performance.

They look great, but their filtration value is zero. They will keeps bugs out, but dirt will flow freely into the engine. Not good.

Yes that is a worry ,

Am already thinking of adding another mesh layer or two over the tops don't know yet but its amazing the carbs don't sound like there suffocating anymore.

Was looking at some photo's in the U.K , someone had black nylon stocking or socks over the tops…could be effective and a cheap replacement every few months…Might give it a go.

Don't use mesh screens - not only to they not filter at all (except for really large stuff), they also badly disrupt air flow right over the venturi, where it has the worst possible effect. Under every one of those mesh strands is a vacuum that creates a great deal of turbulence.

Just take them off and run the lunch box filters you have on there. It will do just fine. Eventually, you may want to get some properly radiused horns made to fit under the filters and still proved some room over the top of the venturis.

Did you have any stacks under the chrome filters? The factory stacks would need some rather tall filters to give enough clearance between the top of the stack and the underside of the filter top.

An expert may correct me, but I would imagine the gains you get from the open trumpets are minimal. Maybe WOT they might do something in a specific rev range, but I think that Fiat's own "UFO" air cleaner is a good compromise. It draws cold air from the front, instead of warm air from under the hood, and offers a pretty big filter area. The sound is subdued, but you can still hear when you open it up. For fun I put trumpets and foam filters on for a while, but apart from sounding nicer (my wife would disagree), giving better access to the dipstick and a nice view of the Webers (all of which I liked), I couldn't find any real objective gains. I did a lot of timed acceleration runs in gear across a wide range and the differences were not there. Given that the solution to deal with the crankcase blowby is messy (I ran a little filter on the breather), I decided to ditch it all and go back to stock. Maybe I'll paint the cleaner with wrinkle black...

Oil catch can/breather. Sight glass on the left indicates when to empty it.

Thanks for the pic Csaba, Phillip at Bits of Italy is working on a similar setup and could be something to look at in the future.
For now have taken all advises onboard and cannot ignore them…The end result being my lunch boxes are back
Air pressured inside the carburettors clean so good to go again…:)
