Another Corbeau Seat Installation
Awhile back I read ClarktheShark's installation thread and was inspired. I had been wrestling with the question of re-upholstering my factory seats or go custom. I spoke with World Uphostery, had samples sent to me, etc. However, they would not do a seat cover with a fabric center; I wanted a seat that will breathe. Leather was an option but was getting pricey. Local shops in my area are very $$$.
My other concern is I have not found my factory seats to be all that comfortable. The back sort of hunches my shoulders. Extra foam may be the answer but then how well would the new covers fit? Then to get a local shop involved and the price goes up.
So, I pulled the trigger and bought Corbeau Sport Seats in Tan with a fabric center. Sitting them on the floor rails and the fit is tight left/right and a bit higher than factory (the mentioned thread warns of this). Some pictures for comparison:
I decided to eliminate the slider rails to keep the height as low as possible. Basically to sit the new seat pan directly on the rail (less the thickness of the plate). I would drill the plate so that the seat fits me and the operation of the pedals is comfortable for me (how often do we mess with this anyway?). I bought new pan head machine screws, studs, and nuts. The thread for the seats is the same as the mounts, 8mmx 1.25. I used Simpson Strong Ties plates to fashion a new bracket.:
The Corbeau seat bottom has numerous built-in mounting points. I used a set that are basically rectangular and 12in x 13 in. I used studs in the seat bottom instead of the supplied Allen head bolts. This way the studs drop through the holes in the plate. Tightening a nut was hard enough, pushing a bolt up into the seat bottom would be near impossible
The finished look:
What is the verdict? I sat my hardtop on the car and the top of my head barely clears, more if I lean the back a bit more than usual. I am just 6' 0". I think the rag top will provide me more clearance. I will try to get that re-installed soon for verification
I DO like the driving position better. My elbow over the door position is more comfortable, the steering wheel alignment/angle is also better IMO. I don't feel like I have to reach for the wheel as much with the leg throw being the same. The seats are very supportive and comfortable, not a tight fit, and not hard to get in to.

awesome. glad you like em. I'm 6' as well. I may also remove my sliders. i don't quite know how i'm going to tighten the bolts to install it yet though. I'm not sure how you did it either.

How is your head clearance when the top is up?ClarkTheShark wrote:awesome. glad you like em. I'm 6' as well. I may also remove my sliders. i don't quite know how i'm going to tighten the bolts to install it yet though. I'm not sure how you did it either.
The mounting took some finageling. The plates are mounted tightly. I made a cardboard template approximating the size of the bottom with a pattern of the base mounting bolt locations. With the seat bottom bolts in your desired location, place the cardboard against the bottom, tap the bolt heads with a hammer to obtain indentations of the bolt locations. This is your template. For installation, the plates are put on just tight enough to allow some movement for alignment. The seats are placed allowing the 4 studs to drop through the pre-drilled holes in the plates. Pull the seat to tighten the plates, drop the seat in and place nuts on the studs. It is tight getting your hand up under there but doable.

Re: Another Corbeau Seat Installation
Head clearance is tight with the soft top. but my head doesn't touch (if i lean forward, it does touch). stock rails probably add 1 inch to the height.
I may also take the slider rails off and just tailor-make the car to fit me and only me.
Are you going to run yours with or without the headrest? I have the headrests on now because they are holding down the seatbelt guides. (not sure if you saw my posts on those. easy to make, very functional)

I haven't put on the headrests yet, waiting until I install the top and check for head clearance. I did see your pictures of the belt holders, but can't find them on a quick search. Can you tell me what material you used and how-to?ClarkTheShark wrote: Are you going to run yours with or without the headrest? Bench-top vice
Welding Machine
Hammer
bastard file
angle grinder
can of paint
3/8 drill bit (drill press is optimal)
3 feet of 1/2"x .125" welding steel. I bought this at Lowes for $5. I pretty much just beat the steel onto to itself in a little oval circle. Welded it shut, then cut a hole for the belts to slip through. after the welding and grinding, I used a file to clean the rough edges. Then painted the whole thing.
I know this a pretty rough explanation. I can take better pictures when i get home.

Re: Another Corbeau Seat Installation
Looks great, the only "concern" I would have would be the structural safety of the attachment point in a collision where you were struck from behind. In a forward collision your body is caught by your seatbelt so even if the seat bracket deforms it does not significantly add to the chance of injury. However in a rear end collision you are supported by the structural support provided by your seat back and the seats connection to the car. The seat is high quality and should handle the force but your thin galvanized "bracket" is not and by using a tapered screw you have eliminated almost 1/2 of your attachment seating area. I would figure that you have a very good chance of your seat separating from the supports which will significantly increase the odds of serious injury. I am not trying to discredit your work, but I am nationally accredited as an accident re-constructionist and I want you and yours to be safe.
Stay Safe,

Re: Another Corbeau Seat Installation
The Simpson plate is thicker than the sheet that the factory mounts are formed from. There are no tapered screws. The studs and Pan head bolts are the same as Fiat and those supplied by Corbeau. I have no safety concerns, other than the low headrest height of the factory seats.Ptoneill wrote:Looks great, the only "concern" I would have would be the structural safety of the attachment point in a collision where you were struck from behind. Re: Another Corbeau Seat Installation
Well if that's been an inspiration to you, you've been an inspiration to me.Awhile back I read ClarktheShark's installation thread and was inspired.
I'm going to buy the:
Corbeau Clubman
A decently low price, and it solves my current issue of using a harness with the low factory seats, where the straps pivot over the weak back frame that would fold like a cheap suit if any real pressure is applied it it. With the Clubman the straps will go through the guides and the seat frame is tubular steel. I might even toss in a five point harness for sh*ts and giggles. Overkill, I know. The seat's not reclinable, but has a less acute angle than some of their other offerings.
I plan to keep the sliding rail, even though I know it might raise me a half inch. I'm 5'9 and 170 lbs so I don't think it will be an issue with seat height or getting legs under the steering wheel. Getting in an out will be interesting with the big kidney bolsters.
Wish my luck with the install once they get here!
Cheers,
phaetn
Re: Another Corbeau Seat Installation
Sport seats like this are amazing in holding you in place and great for track days. However, two points to make. Be sure you fit in it, sport seats tend to be built for scrawny guys like me. Also, be aware they are a pain to get in and out of with the high bolsters. Maybe not too bad with the top down but almost impossible with the top up.
