Hey Kevin, any chance you know a guy, owns two spiders, lives in or around Westbrook ME, name is Barry? I know, needle in a haystack...
I used to know him, and then I got divorced...ha
One of the more minor things I lost in that arrangement.

Re: Spider 2.0 crate motor
Most Fiat parts vendors can easily build that. A mild performance engine. It should be making that power at lower rpm, tho.

That name doesn't ring any bells, and Westbrook is not far from here. I willmSoFlaFiat wrote: Hey Kevin, any chance you know a guy, owns two spiders, lives in or around Westbrook ME, name is Barry? I know, needle in a haystack...

Re: Spider 2.0 crate motor
Any word on the crate motors?
Re: Spider 2.0 crate motor
I was hoping somebody would leak out a source, all I've been able to find is the engine work section of midways shop. It looks like they offer everything but a complete drop in engine. You'd think somebody would offer that if they are already the fiat machine shop rebuild people. I was fishing guys, sorry to get your hopes up. I'd pay 3K for a fresh engine ready to drop in with over 130hp. I'd think midway could do it, but they didn't even reply to my email.

Re: Spider 2.0 crate motor
Forgive my ignorance wouldn't that also require new drivetrain reinforced body/shell brakes etc to handle the extra power?

You should call Allison Automotive. There are others as well, but Mark does this regularly for clients.paintdudeluke wrote:I was hoping somebody would leak out a source, all I've been able to find is the engine work section of midways shop. For a 30% bump in power? No. But it would make passing much more available.4uall wrote:Forgive my ignorance wouldn't that also require new drivetrain reinforced body/shell brakes etc to handle the extra power?

Re: Spider 2.0 crate motor
130hp is not that hard to achieve in a 2.0l fiat.
10-1 compression
40/80 cams with 10mm lift +/-
big valve head
proper induction, 38adl, etc
proper exhaust
just remember fiat gets 120hp out of a euro spec 2.0

Re: Spider 2.0 crate motor
This started of with a $3,000.00 price tag for a crate motor. I have to say that getting to a quality rebuilt to put out 130 HP for $3K from a stock motor may be difficult to do for that price . Parts mentioned previously along with shipping, tear down, rebuild to spec, ship back, install with all the new bits and have it running properly... More than $3K.
I think I have over $6K in parts alone on my car. Currently 138 HP at the wheels or about 158 HP at the fly wheel. As long as I don't stomp on it hard frequently the stock trans, diff and body are working out well without real issue for almost four years now.
While I can't reccomend it. You may be much better off finding the right used japanese motor with 16/32 valves and installing that for added power at a lower cost.

When set up right these car were nice performers, even stock, except for the 79/80 Spider 2000, it was a dog from the (quoting Bayless) "anemic" carburetor.TX82FIAT wrote:This started of with a $3,000.00 price tag for a crate motor. 90% of the Spiders out there today could simply be rebuilt to stock for their model year and the owner would feel a dramatic increase in performance. Most people have never driven a Spider that actually works fully to original spec. This is achievable for $3,000 or less. I can assure you that a 1438cc, the lowly 1438cc, smallest of the small, is a riot to drive when everything is working right and dead stock. Well, okay, the stock carburetor on the USA model was puny...so put a DFEV or DMS on it and haul ass.
Another point I like to make (I like percentages): I bet 50% of the cars out there with electronic ignitions (Marelli type) have them set wrong and connected wrong, which impacts accelerator dramatically, especially on FI cars.
