Removed front bumper, added turn signals

Post by SWhiteley »

I think the pictures speak for themselves.

They are Harley Davidson 'pancake' turn signals I got for around $30 on eBay. The brackets were simply (hah!) welded up cold roll steel. Getting the angle right was tough, and there was a lot of trial and error. The result, I think looks decent.

My initial idea was to have them sticking out of the hole, hanging down from a bracket. The second idea was inside the grille area in the corners. The mock ups I did for that didn't look good, but I know some have the turn signals in the grille area.

I'll be creating a spot and fog light bar to mount to the bumper mounts, coming out of the oval bumper holes. Original 8" lights would be ideal (as in period lights of the type used on the rally spiders), but there are 6 1/2" lights that will look decent, I think.

Going for an Abarth look because they look pretty damned cool.Picked up some period Italian mud guards with FIAT printed on them (keep the rocks out of the rust holes).

I agree ... nice.

We've all come up with lots of approaches to the bumperless-turn signal "problem". I'm thinking perhaps pulling together a master .pdf which has the various ones documented.

My list so far:

1 Reusing the "round" holes
1.1 Allisons Automotive
1.2 Vicks Engineering
1.3 Harley Davidson based components
1.4 Jeep based components

2 Reusing the "square" holes
2.1 VW based components
2.2 Jeep based components
2.3 Mitsubishi based components
2.4 Gritracing fillers

3 Grill mounted
3.1 ???

4 Others
4.1 Gritracing Spoiler based

Love the brackets/light solution! That was one of my initial ideas too.

Not to jump your post but here's a couple more ideas.

My first attempt I did was built brackets to mount the stock lights behind the square holes, liked this alot. (mounted to the same bolts you did, maybe call this option 2.5 to the list)

Then came up with this solution (sucker for chrome), I put Marks bumper hole lights in the square holes, grabs on 3 sides very well & lets me still use bumperettes. (Maybe call it option 2.6)

Keep up the good work & show us any other solutions for other issues you have to deal with!

These are from a 97 Merc Sable
the bulb sockets are from a Taurus. They provide both
turn signal and park lightImage
