wheezy?

Post by scampbel98 »

Ok, finally got in a good road test today. Recently built motor and updated exhaust
1.8L block bored .080 over
Vicks 8 mm domed pistons, cold compression around 200
2L FI head. Stock valves. Pro valve job and set up. Stock cams.
1.8L intake with a new Weber 32/36 DFEV
4:2:1 exhaust
Hi flow cat, stock resonator, Ansa twin exhaust
5 speed, 390 rear
15" wheels

car is flat out at 80mph fully floored, 5000 RPM

Something doesn't seem right. should there be some more top end?

Clearly something is not right. First check your ignition timing and cam timing. If they are OK you might check the jetting on your carb and also make sure your carb linkage is opening the secondary all the way.

Thanks Carl. Cam timing is on the dots. Dizzy is at 10 I think. I'm wondering if the stock resonator is shot. Pulls great to 80 then nothing left. Should be making plenty of power

Resonator is just a small glass pack muffler and I've never heard of them being an issue. If the perforated pipe had fallen apart I would think it would rattle. My money is on the fuel supply. Could be a clogged tank vent (try driving with the gas cap loose or removed), bad fuel pump or carb float set too low. I would suspect the cat but you said you replaced it with a new one so that should not be the issue.

I have no idea what your problem is, but with a stock 82 2L I get about 110 indicted at 5500 rpm. This is most likely about 102 or so. Keep checking as with your set up you should do much better. Check the basics and simple stuff first. If you keep at it you will get there. Remember just test and change one thing at a time so you know what helps and what does not. I am sure others on here will be of more help. Let us know what your problem or problems where. Get it running good and enjoy it.

I didn't reuse my original Ansa, It sounded like it was filled with junk, and would not have flowed well. Also try a run with the gas cap on very loosely, to check if the tank vents. That can cause a fuel starvation problem.

Fiat128: You're assuming i'm not on a track or close course ;)
RacyDave: New ANSA, turns out the vent lines below were missing the check valve anyhow... so free flow

How does the car run up to 80? Does it put nice and strong and just die at 80 or is it underpowered the whole way?
Also, at what rpm in 5th is it dying, I know you say 80 mph but maybe your speedo is wildly off.

An update... checked speedo (shallow 80MPH version) on a 1980 Fiat 124 5 speed using phone GPS
at 25MPH indicated - 30 MPH on the GPS
at 30MPH indicated - 40 MPH on the GPS
at 60MPH indicated - 72 MPH on the GPS

so... at 80 MPH and 5500 RPM...

Is 96 mph. It should go faster than that, if that's important to you.
I'm too old to care what the top speed of mine is.

BTW, on the ignition timing you need to check full advance, ie at over 3500-4000 rpm, it's much more important than what it is at idle.
Also make sure the intake and exhaust camgears have not been switched.

When my engine is done, I better go beyond 95 or there going to be trouble
I might run it on the autobahn, I got to keep up with the flow
