Rustoleum Paint Job...
After reading a bunch of posts on other forums about a roll on Rustoleum paint job, I thought I'd play with it a bit. I have and extra hood so I wire wheeled it down to metal, then sanded with 120 grit then 320 gritand shot it with off the shelf Rustolem oil based paint... I used my spray gun as the roller method seems to take forever. I gave it two coats... no sanding in between and it flowed really nice and covered quite well. The shine is as good as most aftermarket jobs I've seen. I would think after polishing, you would not be able to tell it from factory. Now, I am going to sit it out in the Arizona sun after a good coat of wax and see how it holds up. I am not a professional painter and all this is just a hobby for me but I'll see how it lasts and let the forum know. Anyone else use Rustoleum? If it holds up well I am going to paint my car with it because of the ease of spraying. Thoughts? By the way, I used the forest green... it looks like a nice English racing green but a bit lighter. -Dave

Re: Rustoleum Paint Job...
I used Rustoleum on my rat racer, but it is really just a really crummy enamel and will fade and turn chalky in no time. Kirker or Summit racing brand paint is cheap and will last much longer. I wouldn't use a non catalyzed paint on anything that I cared about. They have cheap paint here:

exactly, it'll look like crap in a year. Get some acrylic enamel with hardener and you'll be pretty happy. Its cheap and being catalyzed it will be tough and you can cut and buff it to look really nice, nason single stage urethane for some stuff too, again cheap and pretty decent. Really easy to work with. You do want a paint with catalyst or all your prep goes to waste when the paint is dead in 6 months. Ive used everything. I paint bikes and hot rods on the side and paint RVs and coaches for a living currently. I think if you try the nason urethane 2k stuff you'll really like it. I use it a lot for solid colors.

I have also had good luck with the Nason as well as Omni AU is you want a inexpensive base/clear.

When I was a kid I had a 1957 Mercedes 219 gas, that was a rustbucket. We masked it and painted it with 35 cans of rattle can grey Rustoleum and it was the cat's ass. Lots of orange peel though. I wish I had pictures of that old car.

I have used Nason acrylic enamel single stage with wet look catalyst. Though price was reasonable. Good results

Re: Rustoleum Paint Job...
Thanks for the suggestions! I painted my VW pickup truck with a basecoat/clear coat from Kirker about 10 years ago and it lasted about 3 years before the clear coat delaminated. I don't blame the paint... it was my first attempt. I contacted Kirker and they suggested using an Acrylic Urethane paint... single stage, two coats. Supposedly very easy to apply and forgiving. Anyone use this paint?

I haven't used the Kirker, but would give it a shot for a budget build. You can find more info on paint and body forums. It is widely claimed that Eastwood and Summit Racing paint is relabeled Kirker. My friend used Eastwood's orange base/clear on his '78 Spider and it came out nice. His first paint job too.

acrylic enamel with a hardener is a great paint for a straight color. If you want to spray a metallic i recommend a clear coat. All paints shrink over time. With a metallic paint, it exposes the metallic leaving a dull finish. It can be rubbed out, but will never stay nice. If it is laid down properly you wont have an issue for a few years. I clear coat stops this issue. Then you only have the issue of the clear coat adhering to the base coat.

Re: Rustoleum Paint Job...
Rattle cans are much harder to use than a HVLP gun, and if you get a decent gun you can shoot decent paint.
I would never take a Spider down to metal with a wheel, you're begging for rust. Sand down the existing paint until smooth (which will sometimes expose a little metal) and use it as a base for primer. No substitute for a good primer.
Rustoleum, well, it's good for lawn furniture, but you can forget about it lasting very long, it will be mostly gone in about a year in the Arizona sun. It just has too many chemicals made for generic use to be much good for a car.
