Interior on a budget

Post by jdveterano »

Good morning folks, I am brand new around here and excited to dive right in.

I bought a '78 spider two weeks ago and while I wait for the weather to break and get the mechanics worked out, I figured I'd start with making the interior perfect as I can on my meager budget.

My upper and lower consoles as well as dash are pretty well thrashed. warped, ripped and otherwise beat to heck. I would love to go all new fiberglass/soft touch on everything and have it looking factory new, but those three pieces ring in at around 900 USD- well exceeding what I'd like to spend.

I have poked around for a while and read some reviews on caps. I am leaning toward an entire cap overhaul, but I wanted to know if there was any one piece that the caps are terrible for, or if they all are serviceable. I also think I am gong to need new wood for the dash (it seems oddly the wrong size based on some space around the dash near the gauges) and would like to take the money saved with the caps and use it there.

Also, with the caps, is the fit snug? If I have uneven areas, would I just shave them down to slide it on?

Thanks for all of the help guys!

The upper console cap is a fail, I will try Mark's fiberglass one next time. The dash one is OK, if your dash isn't warped. That could be the reason for the gaps that you have now.
