Rear Plastic Window Issue

Post by speedracer »

I leave the top down in my Spider nearly all of the time, even when I store it in the winter. Well, after all of that time down, I noticed there is now a seam or fold across the rear plastic window when I put the top up. It's like a distorted line going right across the window. I've been leaving the top up over this winter in the hopes it will work or stretch it's way out, but so far, no real luck. The fold still shows on the window. I'm hoping it's not permanent.

Anybody else have this problem, and is there a way to work this fold or distortion out?

If you have a back seat in your car? It from the top resting on the back section and rubbing all over, when you fold it put a dish cloth towel or something light material on the window part as you fold it in, it protects the back window
You mean like a mark across your plastic window? Right

Yeah, that's correct, a line across the rear window.

I will definitely try putting a towel across the window from now on. It's a little late, since the line is already there, but the window is still in good shape and clear, so I can keep from doing anymore damage to it.

Any cure for the damage already done?

The window can be polished.

What would you use to polish it?

A little buffer and some compound just like polishing paint or a plastic headlight. The trick is to spray water on it so you buff it wet, then you can't "burn" it. It is a bit messy with the compound flying around. Find a headlight restore guy and give him 25- to try it. Save you time and mess. I have a nice 4" air buffer that uses various foam pads that velcro on. Its actually not that messy and works awesome. If it has a stubborn wrinkle warm it up with a heat gun and rub it wearing a brown cotton yard glove and you can massage it out without scratching it or burning your hand.

guessing your talking more like a dent along the window and not really a stain or dirty ???

thinking it might be temp things ...temporary and temperature related .... temporary in the fact I think it will come out and temperature because its winter .... few good hot days with the top up and window will flatten right out ... mine does ... but not just sitting ..need some wind and sun

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

Yeah, it's not a yellow stain or dirt, it's more like a line or crease with a little distortion in the plastic.

I was also thinking, or hoping, that a few good days in the hot sun might help get the distortion crease out. I just need some hot sun to do that though, and that has been in short supply here in the northeast lately! If that doesn't do it, then maybe a heat gun and massage might bring it out. Then lastly, I'll try the 3M product that was posted.

I don't think the heat thought could hurt anything. Temperature inside a car in the sun can get up close to 150 degrees. You could try putting a portable electric heater in the car with the top up and see it getting the entire top warm helps the window straighten out.
Caution: I tried putting my top up in the garage after the car sat for a couple winter months and my rear window cracked. It might be too cold to to move your top.

you need to see if it has been scratched from rubbing or just a crease from sitting in one position all the time, or probably both. Using a polishing compound will work good with the scratch. Would be perfect but you will be able to see thru it. One the permanent crease, try use a hair blower on it. Careful not to get it too hot.
