I'm at the same point in my engine rebuild. Having a local shop here in CT, Kiwi Engineering, do the work, I'm supplying the parts. So far I have a lower end from a 2.0L from a 82 FI engine. Will probably have HC pistons installed once I know condition of the cyl, bore's. Presently the head from this engine is at the shop, have purchased oversized valves, new guides and seals. Could use any advise as to amount of rework that should be done on the head as far as porting ect. BTW i'm looking at keeping the comp ratio under 10:1, planning on running twin downdraft carbs, need to determine what cams to buy, any suggestions would be helpful. Will be including many of the same upgrades as you have planned on your engine but haven't thought that far ahead.

If you only want 10:1 you definitely don't want 8mm domes on the pistons!

measure the compression height of the pistons that came out of your engine, measure the distance they sit down into the bore when the piston is at TDC, and measure the flycut volume... from that you can determine which piston would best suit your requirements, and give 10:1 with the smallest dome height possible with the compression height that will give a tight squish/quench clearance...Do some math before you hand over the cash...don't shop JUST based on dome height, the compression height for Fiat twin cams varies from 37.75 up to 39.5mm with not only different height but also different dome base widths, and different flycut depths and sizes.

As far as the head goes, the seat throat size is what determines the actual flow... not the valve head size...optimum flow with a 43.5 valve is a seat throat too large for the stock seat... so new valve seats are the go... throated appropriately, without the throat enlargement the bigger valves will achieve very little.

Brief rundown on seat throat sizes...

1400/1600 34.4 - 34.6mm intake - 32.0 - 32.2 exhaust (these use a 41.4mm intake valve)
1800/2000 37.0 - 37.2mm intake - 32.2 - 32.4 exhaust (these use a 42.4mm intake valve)
100S/105TC 40.0 - 40.2mm intake - 33.2 - 33.4 exhaust (these use a 43.5mm intake valve)

sure you can enlarge the throat of the standard seat in your USA spec head... but even with that effort your still not near the throat size and flow potential of the later heads...lucky if you can get the throat out to 38.5 ID, still about 1.7mm less than the stock late heads before you apply the same principles to that head (or similar sized valve seat) and get it out to 41.5mm ... doesn't sound like much, but work out the cross section.

pi x 19.25 squared = 1164mm2
pi x 20.75 squared = 1353mm2

thats almost 20% gain, so it's a BIG difference...The Hp potential of the engine is tied to the flow potential of the head, and the flow potential of the head is directly tied to the seat throat area...if your not considering large seat throats and even better fitting oversized seats and using the larger stock valve then you might as well not bother with the porting... Fiat manages to get 130hp from a similar engine to yours, with emissions cams adn zero porting to the head... the port size of the 125/130Tc is about the same as a euro small valve seat throat 1800/2000, so it's not a bigger port that gives the head the extra flow potential ... so chances are without a big enough seat throat that any 'porting' is likely to drop the air speed and have an overall lack lustre effect.

8mm dome with 39.5CH can push well past 12:1 with the right head and head gasket combination quite easily...

I guess I bought 8mm pistons

Steve,
Thanks very much for that advise on rebuilding the 2.0l, will keep you advised as to the direction I and Kiwi Engineering take. This is a real fun project for me. From a hobby in woodworking to one in engine build it is very exciting for this 65 plus year old retiree.
