on oval air cleaner what to do with extra hoses?

Post by timspider »

On my 78 I just switched out the stock air cleaner set up with an oval unit. There were 2 lines running to the stock assembly. One is the crankcase ventilation hose- I put a crankcase breather unit on the end of that, and it just resides next to the oval.

My question is about the smaller hose that comes from the carb. Do I just cap that little hose? That's what I did. Does that little hose need to breathe? If so, what it the best thing to do with it?

I have a backfiring issue now at the carb at low rpms. Car does not want to idle. After warm up, as it comes down to idle speed, she starts sputtering and throwing little backfire pops through the carb. and dies. Seems to run well at cruising speed.

I'm not sure that's related (but someone cleverer will be along). As I found out for my twin IDFs, it's just a vacuum hose (I wonder why they bother to pipe it to the air cleaner - maybe to help pull the crankcase blow-by into the air cleaner?). I plugged both of mine (well, joined them with a hose) and had no problems with drivability.

I'd be interested to see a picture of your oval cleaner.

What is a crankcase breather unit?

if this pic doesn't get auto cropped down, you can see the crankcase breather next to the air cleaner

What is the advantage of doing this versus having it continue on into the intake manifold, other than the obvious one of keeping the intake a little cleaner? Does it provide any type of performance improvement?

I'm new to this car and everything about it so not in a position to say what effect this has on performance. The reason I did this is that I bought the oval for better air flow, and the unit had no accommodations for either of the hoses that connect to the stock unit.
Still not sure this is the best way to go, just the one I found.
the engine does seem to breathe a lot better, it's certainly louder, and I have the stock exhaust on, which will change this wednesday.
sorry I don't have a better answer

That's a cool looking set-up. Where did you get it? Did you have to fabricate anything to get it on the carburetor? I'm thinking of doing something similar on my '77 for the same reason, to improve my air flow.

Sorry, my bad. I was referring to the air breather that terminates at that small filter versus going back into the intake manifold. Is there any reason to do this other than keeping the intake clean?

I got the oval on this page, which will show you some other options as well:

https://www.autoricambi.us/parent_categ ... ERS/1.html

The oval bolted right on to the stock carb with no changes.

I got the small filter at a local auto parts store- called "crankcase breather" I think.

I'm not sure that the K&N rant belongs here. Also not sure about the whole air flow argument with regard to replacing the stifling stock air cleaner on a fiat with anything that breathes. We now get that you don't like K & N filters. Noted.

Now back to the conversation at hand.

Ya know, Fiat Factory, I see you criticize all kinds of stuff that people on here do or try to do. Like you are the only expert on any thing mechanical. My comment to you, STUFF IT. I am sure you don't have all of the answers.

Does my 1608 make more power when the twin IDFs are drawing their air through foam filters instead of the stock turtleback?
Probably not.

Do I worry about the incremental increase in dirt ingested by the engine, an engine which is 42 years old, gets new oil every 3'000km, doesn't go out in rotten weather and has anyway long ago earned a rebuild?
Nope.

Does it make me giggle like a schoolboy when those IDFs start making all sorts of nice gobbling noises when I get on it?
You betcha'.
