Bumper removal on 72

Post by 124Germ »

I bought VW T-style bumperettes for my 72, but am curious how to remove the drivers side rear bumper mount. All the posts are for the round shock style. Am I required to still remove the gas tank?

This VW style will work nice with rubber boot too, slide them through the slot and up to the mounting holes (which will need to be drilled to match up).

I will try to take a look this weekend if I can get to the bracket bolts from under the car.

Thanks

The blade style bumper brackets can be removed without pulling the tank. it is very restricted and much easier without the tank. a racheting box end wrench makes the job far less painful.

Is there access from the trunk or underneath?

Thanks, I plan on working on it this weekend.

There's a slotted bolt inside the end of the shock tube... there are no slots on a 72 just studs that the mount slides over... mine is a 72... you will have to fabricate something to make the front work.. On the back there are slots under the studs but you'll have to cut the plate off that the stud is mounted to...here's a pic showing the slots after I cut the backing plate off with a sawsall...

All the bolts that hold the bracket on are in the trunk. two on each side.

The 72 is an oddball with regards to bumper mounting..again I own one...all bumpers mount to studs welded to the frame..you'll have to make the modifications I mentioned in order to use your nerf bars...

Have fun!
