Re: Early Bumpers For Sale
Thats it,,,, only 850 US Dollars? for a set of bumpers? gez i'm gonna need to start pawning things to restore my 124!
Re: Early Bumpers For Sale
Keep in mind that you will have to shell out another Euro's 100 to get these baby's , around $140.00 plus post… the bumpers advertised already have them fitted not to mention the bumper protectors also included , personally i think it's a great find and the price is reasonable.
Re: Early Bumpers For Sale
be aware those bumpers are not nearly as heavy as the originals. The bumpers I've seen are about as thick as a piece of paper and won't take any impact

Re: Early Bumpers For Sale
The original early style bumper looks good but it wouldn't save you in a wreck..late style are better for impact protection but look ugly.. I prefer no bumpers or Abarth style ..I am having custom aluminum bumper blocks made for me. It is way cheaper for me to do that than buy bumpers of any type for the spider. Any who...my two cents...

I think the term Ugly would be politically insensitive to some of our late model Spider ownersv6spider wrote:The original early style bumper looks good but it wouldn't save you in a wreck..late style are better for impact protection but look ugly.. Re: Early Bumpers For Sale
Mark, I purchased a complete set this summer from Harrington. One of my back bumpers was damaged in an accident. The bodyshop and I were pleasantly surprised by the thickness and quality of the bumpers. So much so, that we replaced my original front bumper. I do agree with you that they are not as heavy as my originals, but I think that is a good thing. As far as taking an impact, with no overiders (rubber thingys) on the 68, any impact will cause a dent. And 45 year old "Italian" (read Russian) steel don't dent well. The stainless ones can be banged out and rebuffed. No rust.So Cal Mark wrote:be aware those bumpers are not nearly as heavy as the originals. IMO many benefits and they look great.

Re: Early Bumpers For Sale
Russian steel? What exactly is this myth about the quality of the steel?
I've done some welding on my 1980 year spider and the steel was good, does anyone really know the composition of this Russian steel?
The Russians are actually quite good at making things...

Re: Early Bumpers For Sale
Anecdote from Wikipedia.... Fiat and Lancia models of the 1970s were particularly infamous for rapidly succumbing to severe structural rust. This is commonly attributed to a well-documented deal made by FIAT with the Russian government for a supply of surplus Russian steel. The Russian government supplied FIAT with large quantities of steel in exchange for the rights and tooling necessary to manufacture a clone of the recently discontinued FIAT 124 (sold under the Lada and Zhiguli names). Though superficially a good deal for FIAT, who off-loaded their old design and tooling at a hefty profit, the steel they received was of an extremely poor quality. There is also anecdotal evidence that poor planning frequently left early X1/9 body-shells un-painted outside the Bertone factory before transportation to FIAT where the rusting body-shells were simply painted over.weekend warrior wrote:Russian steel? Re: Early Bumpers For Sale
I know that Fiat used Russian steel, there's not many countries that have their own supply of iron ore, but is there any evidence that it's composition is any different? Any car from that era is susceptible to rusting, manufacturers were lax about rustproofing, I've restored a couple of Chryslers that needed more repairs than my spider.
Has it just become a baseless excuse?

"It's on the internet, so it's fact"...
A yarn originally twisted in the UK press ... I've never found nor read a scientific analysis of the "Russian Steel".
Given that just about every car made before zinc-dipping rusts like, well, iron; those bloody Russians sure had the markets covered.
Ciao,

Re: Early Bumpers For Sale
I think the big issue with Russian made items is inconsistent quality control.
