I finally took the plunge and purchased a 1977 Spider. I am looking forward to putting this car back to its former glory.
My first inspection of car showed that the trouble prone areas, shock towers, floor pans, rockers, etc. looked good. There are 2 areas on back of L and R Rear wheel arches that have rusted through. (about 3" square). There is noticable rust through along the inside rear of the trunk including about 2 in along the lip of fuel tank. After a test drive, the transmission shifted well through all 5 gears and upon purchase I drove the car 1 hour home. (Took all day with wife and son following closely behind and threats of divorce!) I recently pulled the interior and it looks like I may need 1 seat rail as well as replacing some metal beneath it. Also the usual 4in square rust though up near clutch pedal. I'm fairly confident I can weld new sheet metal, having never done so. Seat pans are in decent shape. I'll will be using the valuable resources on this forum for help and guidance.
I recently finished a 5 year resto on a 1977 Triumph Bonneville motorcycle and in need of another project. In 1977 I was a sophomore in high school. It was a good time to be an adolescent! I owned a Spider in college that was painted like a Zebra! I was driving home one evening when the oil light came on. I knew I needed to shut down right away but I limped the last mile or so home. I felt engine starting to bog pulling into driveway. Next morning engine was siezed. Perhaps I am now seeking redemption!
