off the deep end

Post by azruss »

I have been struggling with what to do with front turn signals. finally bought some Harley lights (stock 86-2000). The thought was to put them in the corner of the grille. They fit fine there except when i opened the hood. I couldnt set them deep enough to get clearance. So I went back to my original idea to mount below the bumpers. With the air dam, there were only 2 places with enough clearance to mount. One was at the edge of the air opening to the radiator. I decided they were too inboard. looked fine there because that is normally a location for driving lights. So I moved them outboard to the most inboard position where there was clearance. This is what i ended up with. It will have to grow on me. Right now, i cant say i like it much.

I like!
I think the placement is fine, centered with the headlights vertically, should look nice at night too.

nope, look like an afterthought. With the effort you've put forth with the cosmetics, they should look more natural

I'm with Mark. You are clearly much more skilled than I will ever be so I'll suggest something I could never do. Could you mount them behind the air dam with a lens flush to the air dam in roughly the place you've got them now?

Russ, is there anyway to place them behind the grill, or will that interfere with the horns and air intake? You could always go back to the signal in the head light. The ones that are effective are a bit more pricey than want you originally tried, but may be worth a second look.

thanks for all the input, guys. I tried them in the grille ...my first choice.. but interefered with the hood opening. With everything on the car flush and tight, they do look out of place. One thing I've tried to do with the mods is make everything bolt on so they could be changed if i didn't like them. This why i havent put them in the spoiler. I'm hoping with the grill in place, they will fit in better. John, I have been resisting the in-headlight version because they are LED and i am hoping to keep all the lights old school. What i was looking for was a skinny profile light ala early 850 spider. would look good in this location. Can't find anything that isnt LED. I can see it coming down to...god forbid....making my own custom lights. If i had a CNC mill, i could probably pull it off. The big thing is the lense. There are some marker lights out there that might work if i could retrofit a dual filament bulb.
My goal here is to keep on task, so the lights will stay until the car is complete. This will give me enough time to live with the lights to see if they grow on me.

OK, here is an alternative. the question is are they far enough outboard. are they any laws about where they need to be located.

better....but....... it is a shame they wont fit in the grill .... hard to tell over the internet but it looks like they would

also you could wire the side markers to flash also with the signals if your worried about "being outboard enough" ... dont know about any laws... but that does not mean there aren't any

I think the wide placement looks better. I read where you want to avoid LEDs, but these mounted to the grill would look pretty trick IMO.

wizard, the LEDs are the same diameter as mine, just thinner. I can push mine deep enough into the grill to clear the hood, but that really buried them in the grill and made them very ineffective as turn signals. I need to find something in the 1.75" diameter to get the clearance I need. Don't see much available that isn't just a marker or LED.

Azruss,

I think they are fine for now, in fact I think they look good.

Don't worry about the "laws". Not likely a cop will stop you and start checking them out with a tape measure. The key is, are they effective as directional signals, particularly the left. As long as they are bright enough to be seen both day and night you're good to go. Making the marker lights blink is also a good idea.

I gotta say its growing on me. You sure do nice work.

I think the original placement is the best. When they are tucked into the grill you can't really see them. The whole point of modern turn signals is that they can be seen from the front/rear, as well as the sides. No point in having a turn signal if no one can see it and know that you are turning.

What I find aesthetically displeasing is those houses in the background, yuck! Everything monotone and the same including the roof tiles? At least paint the trim a different color. They look like they are made of marshmallows.
