having the turn signal hanging will make it really hard for oncoming drivers to see

I plan on having turn signals but just not the ones on the 80 model. I will use these

I sometimes have difficulty seeing the turn signals in the newer cars. Clear lens and a dinky little orange light is stupid in my opinion, however In your case, have you thought about wiring in the turn signal to the side marker lights as well?
I believe some here have and suspect helps if the front light is small or tucked away a bit.

I plan to do so in order to add safety and make the car more visible.

To be honest folks I live in a small little country town, We do not have a lot of traffic. I was also considering getting a set of these head lights that have amber turn signal built into them..

Picking up an old thread... After a year with the integrated ones in, there's a distinct ice cream effect on my driver side light... With standard 55W H4 bulbs (thanks csaba for noticing!).... I've now got a glass set and I'm retrofitting the indicators to them.

The problem is that you live on the wrong coast...here on the leftist coast nobody uses their turn signals so it wouldn't matter if anyone can see them. :)
