Painting Iron Cross rims
I thought I had see an Iron Cross rim that had been painted (silver/grey with black in the arrow parts) Googled the crap out of the interweb and have not found them Has anyone painted their rims? Photos are always encouraged

Re: Painting Iron Cross rims
Cleaned mine up with alcohol last winter and I believe the paint I used was Duplicolor Wheel paint. Made a large 12" deep cardboard tube to mask the tires, so no need to remove them.
Painted the originally black areas with a brush using flat black. I believe painting the arrow shaped areas would give a look quite different than the original "Iron Cross" shape - would be interesting them to see if you finish a set that way.
I considered painting the arrow areas the body color, which I believe was done on some '70s and later premium Detroit wheels, but decided against it.

I sanded these down, 2 coats of primer, 2 coats of Dupli-Color wheel silver, and 2 coats of clear. THEN, I went back and painted the coves flat black. I've never seen a set of these wheels with the arrows in black.

Re: Painting Iron Cross rims
The arrows in mine were painted when I bought my car. I personally hated the look and stripped them. Paint is REALLY hard to remove from the textured "arrow" areas. I had to repaint them silver since I couldn't strip all the paint.

I got.them from a FLU member who didn't need them any longer. They were brand new still in the ooeriginal package. I put them on a car I sold earlier this year. I have Turbo wheels with the red center caps on my 82.

Re: Painting Iron Cross rims
I am not real good at posting photos but here is a try
The wheels were stripped cleaned with a die grinder and 3M fine pad. Etched with an aluminum etch then primed with an epoxy
white metal primer. Then epoxy gray primer and 2 coats of Dupont Imron silver. The black is Imron also but hand painted

Re: Painting Iron Cross rims
having looked at mine closer I noticed that I have all one colour. There is no break, no black on the background. Not warm enough for the paint so I will prep over the winter then paint in the spring, photos always coming

Re: Painting Iron Cross rims
Here is what I did 5 years ago and I did not have to polish them since. First I took care of all the curb rush with a file. Than I took them up to my living room (it was winter) and hand polished the rim while watching a movie. It took about 2hours per wheel, sanding them down to 1200 grit and than use metal polish. I painted them in the basement and had tires installed.
After that I started over with the file, sanding and polishing because 3 wheels got badly scratched by the tile

Re: Painting Iron Cross rims
Nice job I have been given very strict instructions by the gorgeous lady that handles my parts *ahem that I am not to be doing any spray painting in the house. Rims are last on the list. I bring the part I want painted into the house to warm up overnight then go out to the garage, paint, then bring the part in to dryTobi wrote:Here is what I did 5 years ago and I did not have to polish them since.
