For 79, the cigar lighter was a seperate inline 8A fuse holder that if memory serves me right is on the wire that supplies the power to the lighter.

The cigarette lighter has a fuse of it's own in an inline fuse holder. You may be lucky to find it right behind the ignition switch area or it may be tucked behind the radio console.

Hello All!

Im new to the site! I too am having problems with my cigarette lighter fuse. I have found the fuse and it had an old glass type 5A fuse that looks fine. However, Ive read that the fuse should be an 8A. The same as those found in the fuse box. Can anybody that has a lighter that is working tell me what fuse should be in there. It may very well be the housing unit itself thats gone or the lighter itself. Any suggestions welcome. My spider is a 1980 Spider 2000.

Thanks!

In your car it should be an 8A fuse in the in-line fuse holder behind the cigar lighter.

I just put my car together after a tranny swap and the most frustrating part was electrical. I figured while I had the console out I'd get all the wiring up to snuff. I found on my '82 that there are 2 in-line fuse holders in the nest of wires behind the fuse panel. One was very hard to find because it had been stuffed up on top of the steering mounting plate. These were both red plastic 2 piece units with spade type connectors on the ends. They open by unscrewing the two halves. One is for the ECU and the other is for accesories. Both of them had the GCB or "european" type 8 amp fuse.

of course, most of us have the Previous-Owner (PO) syndrome to fight, in addition to the mid-year factory changes to contend with; especially when the topic is under the dash wiring. The cigar lighter circuit seems to be one that is frequently tapped into by many folks cuz it is always hot and generally capable of running most of our accessories.

My glass tube 8A fuse holder is located behind the fuse panel about where the top of the clutch pedal rests under the dash. it is RED. That is on the '80. I have no idea where it is for the '78.

OK. Thanks to all that replied! The fuse holder that I found in near the ignition switch. Had a red wire. There was a 5A glass tube fuse. Is this connected to the lighter or is this for something else??? Is a 5A fuse even required for anything in this car. There is no power to the lighter at all. I have put an 8A fuse in it. Still nothing. Going to look for the one near the fuse panel next. This things gotta work!!!

My 72 shows a 16 amp fuse for the lighter. I'm in the process of replacing the heater fan motor on my 71...what a PITA! The cigarette lighter and courtesy light have not worked and I found the cigarette lighter was disconnected. You may have to pull the console and start tracing wires. I can tell you how fun that is if you really want to know.

The fuse holder should be red and about 3" long, with two black wires in oneside and a red wire out the other. It uses a 8A fuse. First make sure that there is power to the black wires coming into the fuse holder. Find the old ceramic style fuse that are in the fuse box and use that as the glass style is not correct (pointed verses flat ends, unless the fuse holder was replaced). If that does not work, you will have to trace the wire back to the cigar lighter to make sure it is connected. You will also have to make sure the ground wire that connects to the lighter is actually grounding the lighter.
Good luck

GBC style glass fuses have the proper ends to replace the ceramic fuses

How or where should the cigar lighter be grounded?

Thanks

When you get your console out you should find a double (or triple if you have a lighted cig. lighter) connector going to your lighter. One wire is 12v constant power (lighter) one is 12v with the headlight circuit (light ring around lighter) and the other is ground. In other words, power and ground were on a single connector originally.
