Re: Speakers
My car came with crappy speakers in the map pockets. The holes were already cut. I replaced them with 6.5" Kenwoods. I made a carpeted speaker board with 6"x9" Kenwoods in the rear.
In short, not sure where you'd put speakers up front without a scalpel.

Would small tweeter work up front and bigger better speakers in the back, just wondering,JammerX19 wrote:My car came with crappy speakers in the map pockets. The holes were already cut. I replaced them with 6.5" Kenwoods. I made a carpeted speaker board with 6"x9" Kenwoods in the rear.

Re: Speakers
Maybe. The speakers I replaced had separate tweeters in the corners of the dash. Couldn't really hear them at highway speed. After installing these full size speakers and a an Alpine KTM-445U 4-ch amp, I can deafen myself at 70+ MPH

Just got my 79 2000, but was trying to find the answer to the same question, and removed the kick panels in the passenger and driver foot bays. Behind these was a layer of insulation... and behind that was a 4.5 Inch cutout in the steel all prepped for a speaker, and there was even wiring there dangling down in the opening. This is an enclosed area in the fender and would be perfect for a speaker... check it out!

I have a 92 Miata that came stock with speakers in the seat headrests that work well at speed with the top down.

Re: Speakers
I find the location of speakers in the map pocket to be very poor placement. I can hear the speakers loud and clear on the side of the back seat. Actually have to put my hand down by the speakers to feel the speakers working since my middle age ears can not hear anything but the music from the back. I've seen people put a tweeter in the door. The best solution for a good surrng sound would be to customize/modify the dash and put the speakers in the dash facing the driver and passenger. I like the look of the stock dash to much to give that idea any merit.

Re: Speakers
The Alpine amp I bought had two pots on it to set the bias for front and rear. Since my fronts are 6.5" rounds in the map pockets and my rear speakers are 6x9s, I set the front at "5" (1-10 scale) and the rears on "3". That balances things out a little.TX82FIAT wrote:I find the location of speakers in the map pocket to be very poor placement. I can hear the speakers loud and clear on the side of the back seat. Re: Speakers
hello spider people,
Simply could not drive my (fourth) spider without this forum. thanks to mods & members - you rock. fitting for this post i think.
I have messed with sound in spiders for years and finally think I have some solid advice on a build-able approach:
- The single must have in my opinion is component speakers. where you place them is debatable, but since you can point the tweeter at the listeners. it makes all the difference in the world. Especially at 65+ on the freeway with the top down - still clear as a bell. Price is from $40 or so and up. I'd stay away from the very bottom but I found a great pair of 6.5" alpines with build in cross-overs for $50. I cut the sheet metal above the map pocket for the 6.5" mid/bass*** and cut a hole in the top front of the map pocket for the directional tweeter. because of the high frequency it does not have to be enclosed to sound good and leaves the map pocket fully functional. To my surprise, these even sounded good without an amp, just the 55w from the deck, although i'll be buying an amp after the engine transplant is complete.
- I call my approach build-able because after the deck & speakers are in everything else is icing on an already tasty cake.
- I've run a small tube sub in the trunk with good results.
- I'm currently experimenting with some 5" subs, from another project, mounted with some risers for clearance on the narrow sloped face directly behind the seat. Sound is improved but the jury's still out on placement.
- Experiment with what you have. good sound does not have to cost an arm & leg.
This is just one mans opinion in a forum of many. I can only hope this helps someone improve the fiat experience as so many posts have improved mine.
Drive safe (but fast)!
*** if you are worried about the back of your speakers you can get foam baffles from Crutchfield.

Re: Speakers
I'm looking for a very small sub that I could mount in my rear back-rest speaker board. If you are finding 5" subs, show me where you got them.
