Transmission 3/4 Gear Sender?

Post by ch33kster »

Hi,

Just on with putting back the transmission and noticed that theres feed between 3rd and 4th gear. Ive read that this connection is for emissions but unsure as to why and how it works (?) also is it necassery to have this on the car?

Thanks folks and I look forward to hearing back from you guys!

When the car is in 3rd or 4th gear and the clutch is being pressed then both the transmission switch and the clutch switch close the circuit to a 12v solenoid in the engine bay. This solenoid opens the high speed idle device on the carburetor, which keeps the RPMs high (1600 RPM) and allows the rich mixture that remains in the carb to burn off.

In other words, it was designed to eliminate unburnt fuel from puking out of the tailpipe during deceleration in 3rd or 4th gear.

I have a diagram if you'd like to see it. I blocked off the switch, removed the clutch switch, and replaced the carburetor so I don't have any of this stuff. I do, however, know how to rebuild the system and make it work if you so desire.
