Installing Modern Radio in 60s Dash

Post by jimmycakes401 »

I got a 1966 top console to put on top of my lower one. I need to cut out a hole for a radio in it and I guess buy a cage. Did a little googling and forum search, but couldn't find any pictures of people doing newer radios. Just the exterior of them installed. I'd like to see some cage action. Anyone have anything laying around I can peek at?

you are puting the cart before the horse. you need to find a radio first and then match the hole to the radio. one word of caution. depth is an issue, so get a radio that is shallow. a CD player might be a problem.

They have these I-Pod/USB/Aux in Stereo's that are called mechless for no mechanical Cd player. some of them have a depth as shallow as 5 inches. When you buy the stereo the cage will come with it to secure into the dash. Azruss is on the money. Just did this on my car and you will not have a lot of room to install if you put in normal location.

I was given a radio. 2"x7" and it is about 6" deep. I have a 1981. I'm sure all the spiders have the same depth. The depth of this unit includes the front face which sticks out from the surface.

Here's the radio I was given. I'll look through the literature and see if I can figure out the size and how to mount it...

I don't think I need to hook up all that satellite stuff. I just want it for the MP3 capability.

Do I go by panel size or installation size?
Installation Size 7 3/16” x 2 1/16” x 6 5/16” 182 x 52 x 159.5 mm

Is that how big of a hole I cut? I'm going to google baskets I guess.

Okay. I found installation instructions and I see I can order the proper sleeve and handle thingies from JVC. I don't feel like going to an audio store to see if they have anything. They usually give me something that "works" rather than the proper hardware.

any single din sleeve will work on the most part as long as you make sure it's snug the only thing that will differ
from the jcv unit is the locking tabs . So to make a simple fix I've used other installation sleeve but using pliers
to bend the sides inward to keep the radio from sliding out to easy . I'm sure your local car stereo shop would
sale you one for 5 bucks since they must do whats called iso mounted ( removing factory radios and installing
aftermarket units using the factory mounting brackets ) in many cars and ending up with spare sleeves .

I just ordered a brand new sleeve and the little clip thingies. The radio was free, so dropping $12 on the parts is nothing. I googled a quick "free shipping" code and used that too! Yay!

I've seen those retro radios. They certainly do look neat. I had a fear that Daniel confirmed... that they don't sound that great. I'm not looking for the best sound in the world, but I want it to sound decent. I got a really nice free head. Also, I remember trying to track down the price on those retro units. I finally found it and I don't remember it being cheap. LOL
