console wood/shifter surround

Post by unplugged »

It has been years since I took it apart so I don't recall how it goes back together.
The veneer covered fiber board that surrounds the gear shift. Is it supposed to be glued to the same shaped metal plate that has the 2 pins on it or is it just held in place by the shift boot ring ?

Thanks

I glued mine using a contact cement that I got at the local hardware store. Just find something that will bond wood to metal. I used four wood working clamps that had rubber feet to prevent scratching the wood and kept them on for 24 hours. I also prepped the metal plate by sanding it down to bear metal then painted it flat black. Put the boot on with the metal ring before you slip it over the shifter and drop it into place. I let mine just sit there without the little plastic pieces that are supposed to hold it down. It makes it easier to get it back up. Last note: the shifter needs to be totally assembled before the plate goes on.
